Battlefield 3 Walkthrough

Ground Vehicles

Wait for your teammates to get inside instead of driving off like a jackass.

While it's nice to know about infantry, what makes a Battlefield game is its use of vehicles. Always be sure to get inside one of these armored beasts. It's an even bigger advantage to play as an Engineer as it becomes much easier to repair and steal vehicles. If your ride is damaged, pop a smoke and repair under concealment. As for enemy vehicles, don't out right destroy them. Instead, blast the vehicle only enough to disable it, lure out and kill the driver and repair it with your own torch.

If you're playing as a Support class, make use of your explosive claymores and C4. If your vehicle is disabled by an enemy engineer, toss down a mine underneath. When the enemy soldier climbs inside they will automatically blow sky-high.

But most important is to stop and allow other players to get inside the gunner seats. Any vehicle becomes much more powerful when two soldiers are able to blast heavy weapons in two different directions. Also, one person can jump out and repair the vehicle while the other provides coverfire. If for some reason you find yourself solo, always be sure to switch to the gunner's seat to help defend a position.

Infantry Fighting Vehicle

The LAV-25 (American) and BMP-2M (Russian) are IFVs. They are slightly faster than the main battle tanks but have less armor and less powerful weapons. IFVs should mainly be used to take on infantry and lighter armored vehicles. In most cases it's weak to the stronger battle tanks, but can combated with quick movement or superior numbers. The gunner passenger should concentrate on soldiers while the main driver disables other vehicles in the area.

The LAV-25 and BMP-2M share scores for unlocks, so you only need pilot one to outfit the other.

  • Unlock Progression: IR Smoke, ATGM Launcher, Belt Speed, Coaxial LMG, Thermal Optics, Prximity Scan, Zoom Optics, Maintenance, APFSDS-T Shell, Thermal Camo, Guided Missile, Reactive Armor

Battle Tank

The M1 Abrams (American) and T-90A (Russian) are the main battle tanks for each side. They are heavily armored with extremely powerful main cannons. However, they are among the slowest vehicles. The best use of the main battle tank is to take out IFVs and anti-air vehicles. It's slow speed makes it harder to take on fast infantry, but it's quite possible. Often it's better to not bother with direct fire and instead kill enemies with area splash damage. The main cannon's fire is strong enough to destroy most walls and kill the foes cowering behind them.

Overall the main thing to look out for are sneaky enemy Engineers and Support classes that will try and disable your tank with explosives. A good gunner should quickly tackle any of these threats, leaving the pilot to destroy stronger vehicles.

  • Unlock Progression: IR Smoke, Coaxial Lmg, Autoloader, Zoom Optics, Maintenance, Coaxial HMG, Proximity Scan, Guided Shell, Thermal Optics, Thermal Camo, Canister Shell, Reactive Armor, City Station

Battlefield 3 Walkthrough

Anti-Air

The LAV-AD (American) and 9K22 Tunguska-M (Russian) are the anti-air vehicles. As the name implies these are the vehicles for taking on enemy helicopters and jets. You should always start with your homing rockets as the air vehicles will attempt to get away. As the rockets cool down, switch to the powerful machineguns to finish off the enemy. These machineguns are strong enough to deal with enemy soldier and even lightly armored vehicles. If you are up against a battle tank, it's best to book it as your guns aren't a good match with the tank's heavy shields.

  • Unlock Progression: IR Smoke, Anti-Air Missile, Belt Speed, Zoom Optics, Proximity Scan, Thermal Optics, Air Radar, Maintenance, Thermal Camo, Reactive Armor

Both in the air and on the ground.

Air Vehicles

Helicopters and planes are much tougher to control than ground vehicles. It's best to try out flying in co-op or smaller servers (Mainly completely empty ones). It will hinder your team if you jump in a whirly bird, only to crash seconds later.

As with land vehicles, it's nice to take an Engineer for repairs. However, it is likely that you'll take too much damage while flying and will have to make a crash landing. If you can time it correctly, ram into an enemy location while you parachute out at the last second.

Scout Helicopter

Helicopters do not accelerate; they only go up or down. To move forward you will have to completely pitch the entire vehicle. This can make it a bit difficult to move and fire accurately at the same time. This makes it important to always pick up a few allied gunners to keep you covered. You'll eventually also gain flares to disrupt rockets, but those are for seasoned pilots.

The AH-6J Little Bird and Z-11W are Scouting helicopters. They are slightly faster than attack helicopters, but not as heavily armed. They also have less unlockable options. Mainly use these little guys for transportation, spotting and taking on infantry.

  • Unlock Progression: IR Smoke, Heat Seekers, Stealth, Belt Speed, Proximity Scan, Air Radar, Extinguisher, Maintenance, Guided Missile, Below Radar, Laser Painter, ECM Jammer

Attack Helicopter

The AH-1Z Viper and MI-28 Havoc are better built for taking on heavy ground vehicles and combating weaker air vehicles. It can be hard at first to take on speedy Flankers and Hornets, but eventually gain guided and heat seeking missiles to take on these enemies.

Attack helicopters control the same as scout helicopters, but have different unlockables.

  • Unlock Progression: IR Smoke, Heat Seekers, Stealth, Autoloader, Zoom Optics, Proximity Scan, Air Radar, Guided Missile, Extinguisher, Maintenance, Thermal Optics, Laser Painter, Below Radar, ECM Jammer, Guided Rocket, TV Missile

Planes

As with helicopters, practice flying planes before taking them out in a fight. Mainly get the hang of turning via rolling to the side and pitching slightly. Use deceleration to make sharp turns, and let go of the throttle once you have plenty of momentum. And of course, spot any enemy you see to rack up points. You are a sitting duck until you get a large enough score for anti-missile flares.

There are two types of jets at your disposal: air-to-ground A-10 Thunderbolts and SU-25TM Frogfoot, and air-to-air F/A-18E Super Hornet and SU-35BM Flanker-E. While each has default weapons better suited for different enemies, whith unlocks they can be great for all situations. Your main objective should always be to take out slower helicopters, followed by hulking tanks. Of course enemy planes will always be on your tail so be sure to get evasive. You can dodge most locked on missiles by flying to extremely high altitudes.

  • Unlock Progression: IR Smoke, Heat Seekers, Stealth, Belt Speed, Proximity Scan, Rocket Pods, Air Radar, Extinguisher, Below Radar, Maintenance, Guided Missile, Beam Scanning, ECM Jammer

@aminal85 L M F A O your funny. hey genius, tell me this, you ever notice that when you do your so called "cooking" that the grenade stays in your hand for an infinite amount of time - and that when you do eventually throw it - it still has the same detonation-time as if you didn't "cook" / hold the grenade button..... ever wonder why that was... here I'll tell you: BECAUSE YOU CAN'T COOK THE NADE. dont go calling people a noob when your the wrong one: scrub.

TheGamer232
TheGamer232

@milan4554 You can change your weapons during game and customize them. Idk what platform your playing on, but for the Xbox 360 its "x" to customize and "b" to change weapon.

@ben_ster and all the noobs that gave him a like. yes actually you can cook grenades on bf3. press the grenade button as usual, then imediately after pull and hold the trigger button to cook it.

You need to include joystick solutions. BF3's so-called PC joystick setting are for game pads. They will actually make your grunt's gun fire nonstop if your joystick is connected because of the way the "fire" button is bound. When will DICE learn to let PC devs code the PC part of the game and send the console devs back to their console worries? So, in order to get real PC joysticks to work, you have to erase (hold esc while in the box) ALL so-called joystick key bindings, then go back and key-bind your real joystick to the vehicles you wish to operate via joystick. Some commands will still be easier from the keyboard such as X for flares, etc. You may still also need to tweak the sensitivity of your devices. I changed mine yesterday and was finally able to fly the chopper without crashing - I hate flying helos/jets with a mouse. So, GS, if you could add something about this for PC BF3'ers, that would be most helpful. Thanks :)

Love B3 but the campaign was over far too quickly without enough vehicle play for me. Multiplayer far better than C.O.D

I'm new to mp. So end up with really poor k/d ratios but love the engineer class, enjoy taking out tanks and choppers. Tho next target's a plane \U0001f609. It's good that you can get points for playing a more supportive role

MISTAKE: the description for the MK11MOD0 rifle is the same as that of the SVD.

@ devastion913 I grabbed it on the PC to test out my new machine ^_^ so the mouse feels a bit awkward for me when flying a jet, as i'm used to consoles. Not to complan, it'll just take a little bit of work. I am finding however, that tanks can absolutely dominate with teamwork, one guy repairs and drives and the other sits on the machine gun watching for little engineers scampering around in the shadows. If you face the tank at the enemies in a choke point and repair from behind while the other guy is shooting, you can keep the tank alive almost indefinately with constant repairs. I finished a match at around 17 - 0 by doing this with some random team member who had the same idea.

devastion913
devastion913

@OverlordGunnar The air vehincles take some work I agree, but what platform are you playing on? On the consoles the legacy stick layout seems to be the easiest for choppers but then once you get a kill in it you have 6 Stinger missles coming your way lol. I end up playing engineer the most too, that and support, using mortars in Rush mode is too hard to resist.

OverlordGunnar
OverlordGunnar

Great game so far (if you ignore the campeign). I generally find myself choosing the engineer class simply because whenever i go with anything else, i find myself in desperate need of a rocket launcher, or i'll jump out of my tank and throw medkits at it before i realize what class i am, that i look like an idiot, and some a$$hole just jacked my ride =p Lag is a problem, and the maps tend to either encourage sniping or result in major rocket battles in narrow choke points which are impossible to break through (metro?). Air vehicles seem a little bit difficult to use (at least for me), has anyone else ever looked up into the sky and witnessed a deranged circus of jets and helicopters spiraling wildly out of control and colliding with one another? It seems a far cry from the terrifyingly lethal attack choppers from battlefield 2. With some practice, however, i'm sure the bar will be raised.

@shanethewolf: True I suppose, but Battlefield has never really been about the story (See Battlefield 2 and before, there were no stories or campaigns at all). DICE isn't the greatest for writing stories. This campaign disappointed me too a bit, but I moved on. Do yourself a favor and play online!

@Fandango_Letho i do attempted its alot of fun to play with your friends but only 4player squad that sucks. im a big fan of Battlefield. ive got BF 1943,BFBC1,BFBC2. sooner or later im still gonna get it back. but not right now its not worth it yet cos when MW3 you cant choose which to play and also UC3.

devastion913
devastion913

@jasonzilla11 It's related to Battlefield and I'm expressing my opinion, is that illegal? The lag is awful and there is no official HC mode, the quickmatch issues are currently being fixed. No, GS can't do anything about it but posting it on Battlefield hasen't done any good either as did posting anything else on other game's sites did. Look at the majority of these comments, they have nothing to do with a game guide either but I don't see you replying to them. Go sit in the corner.

shanethewolf

@Fedorov92 Yes, I think you must be right, I just wished they made it clear the campaign is just an afterthought as I don't play games online.

@milan4554 You're entitled to your opinion, but it's obvious you played little of the game. It's pretty clear that this is not your cup of tea.

soo disappointed on Battlefield 3. what they did not do...changed nothing. 1.squad system up to 6 or 8 players 2.wouldn't let you choose or customize weapon classes during gameplay or after death 3.gameplay not balanced 4.online servers still 5hit 5.graphics similar to MOH and Bad Company 2 6.BF would never win over COD 7.RESPAWN ENTERTAINMENT TEAM the ex-Infinity Ward? employees are making FPS shooter cant wait i got it last Friday 28th then return it today.and gonna get UC3 haha

@shanethewolf, it's not a game you play for the campaign, period.

This feels more like an "interactive movie" than a game. I'm 4 stages in and I feel like I've barely had any control. And that flight mission is abysmal. Reminds me of those old CDI games with the streaming pre-rendered footage and a crosshair. Hope it picks up because I'm regretting wasting my time so far.

@nord calm down. It's not as if they hack your computer and steal your credit card number. Sometimes you need to trade inconsequential privacy for new technology. Besides, ever since the patriot act much more important private information than what settings your computer is on have been compromised.

jasonzilla11

@devastion913 And how does that connect with a guide? It's not like GS can do anything about it. Complaining on here doesn't help anything.

I want the MP7 and everyone I know either has it on PC or doesnt and wont even get it! What do I do?! I play with PS3!

devastion913
devastion913

I could care less about all of this I just want them to fix the lag problems and issues with the quickmatch. Also, why is there not an official hardcore game mode like in BC2? There are ranked hardcore servers but they are a pain to get in andthey vary in settings. Hardcore with a minimap is not hardcore.

Just letting you know but you guys are missing the Type 88 LMG for support weapons.

So we have to play co-op to unlock certain weapons? About how long does it take to obtain 441,000 co-op score, because that sounds kind of agonizingly time consuming for a mode I won't play more than 10 - 20 times (even if it is quality).

I have a hard time getting all the pc controls down. You don't really have a ton of time in-game to look at your controls, so a guide on what buttons do what would be nice. For example, I had to google search how to spot on the pc, which btw is the Q key. Knowing how to switch seats in a vehicle would be nice too, so that I could switch to the turret on the humvee etc, when there are no passengers. Just little things like this that you seem to have to find out as you play can be somewhat frustrating.

i'm not reading through all of it to ask this, but is this just a database or are there information given by the editors, like tips and whatnot? if it's the latter, then you definitely will need a vehicles section.
