Americans and Russians collide. Our Battlefield 3 Walkthrough gets you ready for the fight with info about online multiplayer, kits and equipment, and unlockable goodies.
While it's nice to know about infantry, what makes a Battlefield game is its use of vehicles. Always be sure to get inside one of these armored beasts. It's an even bigger advantage to play as an Engineer as it becomes much easier to repair and steal vehicles. If your ride is damaged, pop a smoke and repair under concealment. As for enemy vehicles, don't out right destroy them. Instead, blast the vehicle only enough to disable it, lure out and kill the driver and repair it with your own torch.
If you're playing as a Support class, make use of your explosive claymores and C4. If your vehicle is disabled by an enemy engineer, toss down a mine underneath. When the enemy soldier climbs inside they will automatically blow sky-high.
But most important is to stop and allow other players to get inside the gunner seats. Any vehicle becomes much more powerful when two soldiers are able to blast heavy weapons in two different directions. Also, one person can jump out and repair the vehicle while the other provides coverfire. If for some reason you find yourself solo, always be sure to switch to the gunner's seat to help defend a position.
The LAV-25 (American) and BMP-2M (Russian) are IFVs. They are slightly faster than the main battle tanks but have less armor and less powerful weapons. IFVs should mainly be used to take on infantry and lighter armored vehicles. In most cases it's weak to the stronger battle tanks, but can combated with quick movement or superior numbers. The gunner passenger should concentrate on soldiers while the main driver disables other vehicles in the area.
The LAV-25 and BMP-2M share scores for unlocks, so you only need pilot one to outfit the other.
The M1 Abrams (American) and T-90A (Russian) are the main battle tanks for each side. They are heavily armored with extremely powerful main cannons. However, they are among the slowest vehicles. The best use of the main battle tank is to take out IFVs and anti-air vehicles. It's slow speed makes it harder to take on fast infantry, but it's quite possible. Often it's better to not bother with direct fire and instead kill enemies with area splash damage. The main cannon's fire is strong enough to destroy most walls and kill the foes cowering behind them.
Overall the main thing to look out for are sneaky enemy Engineers and Support classes that will try and disable your tank with explosives. A good gunner should quickly tackle any of these threats, leaving the pilot to destroy stronger vehicles.

The LAV-AD (American) and 9K22 Tunguska-M (Russian) are the anti-air vehicles. As the name implies these are the vehicles for taking on enemy helicopters and jets. You should always start with your homing rockets as the air vehicles will attempt to get away. As the rockets cool down, switch to the powerful machineguns to finish off the enemy. These machineguns are strong enough to deal with enemy soldier and even lightly armored vehicles. If you are up against a battle tank, it's best to book it as your guns aren't a good match with the tank's heavy shields.
Helicopters and planes are much tougher to control than ground vehicles. It's best to try out flying in co-op or smaller servers (Mainly completely empty ones). It will hinder your team if you jump in a whirly bird, only to crash seconds later.
As with land vehicles, it's nice to take an Engineer for repairs. However, it is likely that you'll take too much damage while flying and will have to make a crash landing. If you can time it correctly, ram into an enemy location while you parachute out at the last second.
Helicopters do not accelerate; they only go up or down. To move forward you will have to completely pitch the entire vehicle. This can make it a bit difficult to move and fire accurately at the same time. This makes it important to always pick up a few allied gunners to keep you covered. You'll eventually also gain flares to disrupt rockets, but those are for seasoned pilots.
The AH-6J Little Bird and Z-11W are Scouting helicopters. They are slightly faster than attack helicopters, but not as heavily armed. They also have less unlockable options. Mainly use these little guys for transportation, spotting and taking on infantry.
The AH-1Z Viper and MI-28 Havoc are better built for taking on heavy ground vehicles and combating weaker air vehicles. It can be hard at first to take on speedy Flankers and Hornets, but eventually gain guided and heat seeking missiles to take on these enemies.
Attack helicopters control the same as scout helicopters, but have different unlockables.
As with helicopters, practice flying planes before taking them out in a fight. Mainly get the hang of turning via rolling to the side and pitching slightly. Use deceleration to make sharp turns, and let go of the throttle once you have plenty of momentum. And of course, spot any enemy you see to rack up points. You are a sitting duck until you get a large enough score for anti-missile flares.
There are two types of jets at your disposal: air-to-ground A-10 Thunderbolts and SU-25TM Frogfoot, and air-to-air F/A-18E Super Hornet and SU-35BM Flanker-E. While each has default weapons better suited for different enemies, whith unlocks they can be great for all situations. Your main objective should always be to take out slower helicopters, followed by hulking tanks. Of course enemy planes will always be on your tail so be sure to get evasive. You can dodge most locked on missiles by flying to extremely high altitudes.
