Americans and Russians collide. Our Battlefield 3 Walkthrough gets you ready for the fight with info about online multiplayer, kits and equipment, and unlockable goodies.

Battlefield 3 Walkthrough

General Primary Weapons

Get starting with Starting Block on the battlefield...of Battlefield 3.

General weapons can be used by all Kits. These weapons are gained by either ranking up in multiplayer or having a high score in CO-OP. The main general weapons are shotguns, but there are also a few assault rifles and PDWs to unlock.

870MCS

The M870 is an American made Pump-Action Shotgun that has been used by Special Forces units for decades. In urban environments the M870 is especially effective due to its high stopping power at close range. The ability to load different types of shells makes the M870 able to adapt to a wide variety of situations, while a narrow choke gives the M870 slightly more range than other shotguns.

  • Unlocked: Rank 1
  • Fire Mode: Single
  • Rate of Fire: Pump Action
  • Ammo: 4 (12 Gauge)
  • Range: Short
  • Attachment Progression: Reflex, 12G Flechette, Extended Mag, Holographic, Tactical Light, 12G Frag, ACOG, Laser Sight, 12G Slug, IRNV, Rifle Scope, M145, Flash Supp., KOBRA, PKA-S, PSO-1, PKS-07, PK-A

Battlefield 3 Walkthrough

PP-2000

Though chambered in the standard 9x19mm caliber, the PP-2000 is designed to use Russian overpressure rounds at high velocity to penetrate body armor. The high muzzle velocity of the PP-2000 gives it a flatter trajectory than other 9mm weapons, and its compact size make it ideal as a Personal Defense Weapon. When equipped with the 40 round extended magazine the PP-2000 also functions admirably in a CQB assault role.

  • Unlocked: Rank 7
  • Fire Mode: Auto, Single
  • Rate of Fire: 600
  • Ammo: 20 (9x19mm Parabellum)
  • Range: Short
  • Attachment Progression: KOBRA, Laser Sight, Suppressor, PKA-S, Tactical Light, Extended Mag, PK-A, ACOG, Reflex, IRNV, Holographic, M145

UMP-45

German built, the UMP-45 is a fully automatic Personal Defense Weapon noted for its versatility and optimal mobility. Essentially an improved version of the MP5, the UMP-45 is functionally similar but substantially cheaper to manufacture and includes several modern upgrades such as the top and forward accessory rail. The UMP-45 is well-rounded and capable as a Personal Defense Weapon.

  • Unlocked: Rank 16
  • Fire Mode: Auto, Single, Burst
  • Rate of Fire: 600
  • Ammo: 25 (.45ACP)
  • Range: Short
  • Attachment Progression: Reflex, Laser Sight, Suppressor, Holographic, Tactical Light, Flash Supp., M145, ACOG, KOBRA, IRNV, PKA-S, PK-A

M1014

An Italian Semi-Automatic Shotgun, delivered to USMC in 1999, the M1014 fires 12 gauge rounds without the need for the pump action seen on the M870. A reliable and versatile weapon, the M1014 is also equipped with a rail for the mounting of various accessories and an open choke that results in wide pellet spread.

  • Unlocked: Rank 22
  • Fire Mode: Single
  • Rate of Fire: Semi Auto
  • Ammo: 4 (12 Gauge)
  • Range: Short
  • Attachment Progression: Reflex, 12G Flechette, Extended Mag, Holographic, Tactical Light, 12G Frag, ACOG, Laser Sight, 12G Slug, IRNV, Rifle Scope, M145, Flash Supp., KOBRA, PKA-S, PSO-1, PKS-07, PK-A

PDW-R

Developed as a Personal Defense Weapon, the PDW-R differs from most other PDW concepts by utilizing the standard 5.56mm NATO rounds of the M16 or M4. This allows the PDW-R to share magazines and supply lines with standard troops while its short length and bullpup configuration allow the PDW-R to be easily operated in CQB. Though it lacks the accuracy of a rifle, the PDW-R has a greater punch at longer ranges than other PDWs.

  • Unlocked: Rank 32
  • Fire Mode: Auto, Single
  • Rate of Fire: 750
  • Ammo: 30 (5.56x45mm NATO)
  • Range: Short
  • Attachment Progression: Reflex, Laser Sight, Suppressor, Holographic, Tactical Light, Flash Supp., M145, ACOG, KOBRA, IRNV, PKA-S, PK-A

SAIGA 12K

This Russian made magazine fed 12 gauge Shotgun is based on the proven AK-47 action and equipped with a folding stock. It is reliable, fast to reload, and capable of mounting a variety of accessories. The Saiga 12K is popular with Russian police and security services, and it is an effective close combat weapon with a wide pellet spread.

  • Unlocked: Rank 34
  • Fire Mode: Single
  • Rate of Fire: Semi Auto
  • Ammo: 6 (12 Gauge)
  • Range: Short
  • Attachment Progression: KOBRA, 12G Flechette, Extended Mag, PKA-S, Tactical Light, 12G Frag, PSO-1, Laser Sight, 12G Slug, IRNV, PKS-07, PK-A, Flash Supp., Reflex, Holographic, ACOG, Rifle Scope, M145

DAO-12

A Battlefield 2 classic, originally developed in South Africa, the DAO-12 is essentially the combination of a revolver and a Shotgun. The fixed drum magazine is made of individual chambers, each holding a single round, which are fired only when placed in line with the barrel. A spring winding mechanism makes reloading an empty weapon a time consuming process and the short barrel results in a wide pellet spread.

  • Unlocked: Rank 38
  • Fire Mode: Single
  • Rate of Fire: Semi Auto
  • Ammo: 12 (12 Gauge)
  • Range: Short
  • Attachment Progression: Reflex, Extended Mag, Holographic, Tactical Light, 12G Frag, ACOG, Laser Sight, 12G Slug, IRNV, Rifle Scope, M145, Flash Supp., KOBRA, PKA-S, PSO-1, PKS-07, PK-A

P90

Developed in Belgium as a Personal Defense Weapon for vehicle crews, Special Forces and Counter-Terrorist groups the P90 is a compact and capable weapon system. The three forward rails allow an operator to mount a wide variety accessories and the 5.7x28mm special armor piercing ammunition is fired at nearly rifle velocity. Standard with a 50 round magazine the P90 is capable as an offensive CQB weapon for highly mobile personnel.

  • Unlocked: Rank 40
  • Fire Mode: Auto, single
  • Rate of Fire: 900
  • Ammo: 50 (5.7x28mm)
  • Range: Short
  • Attachment Progression: Reflex, Laser Sight, Suppressor, Holographic, Tactical Light, Flash Supp., M145, ACOG, KOBRA, IRNV, PKA-S, PK-A

USAS-12

A South Korean produced Automatic Shotgun, the USAS-12 was specifically developed for the combat Shotgun role. Feeding from a box magazine, and capable of both Automatic and Semi-Automatic fire, the USAS-12’s high weight makes recoil manageable. The open choke results in a wide pellet spread.

  • Unlocked: Rank 43
  • Fire Mode: Single
  • Rate of Fire: 300
  • Ammo: 6 (12 Gauge)
  • Range: Short
  • Attachment Progression: KOBRA, 12G Flechette, Extended Mag, PKA-S, Tactical Light, 12G Frag, PSO-1, Laser Sight, 12G Slug, IRNV, PKS-07, PK-A, Flash Supp., Reflex, Holographic, ACOG, Rifle Scope, M145

AS VAL

The AS VAL is an integrally suppressed Soviet designed Assault Rifle developed for use in the Spetsnaz. Chambered for a special high performance armor piercing 9x39mm round, the AS VAL includes mounts for using optical, red dot or even night vision scopes. The VAL is designed to be fired only with the suppressor attached, and therefore prevents the rifle from mounting underslung attachments.

  • Unlocked: Rank 45
  • Fire Mode: Auto, Single
  • Rate of Fire: 900
  • Ammo: 30 (9x39mm)
  • Range: Short
  • Attachment Progression: PSO-1, Tactical Light, KOBRA, PKA-S, Laser Sight, IRNV, PKS-07, PK-A, ACOG, Reflex, Holographic, Rifle Scope, M145

MP7

Another contender for the newly developing PDW market the MP7 is currently in service with the German Bundeswehr and the Norwegian Armed Forces. The MP7A1 includes an improved stock, additional safeties, and added rails for mounting lights, lasers, and sights. The weapon is also capable of being suppressed, giving it excellent close combat stealth performance.

  • Unlocked: 189,000 CO-OP Score
  • Fire Mode: Auto, Single
  • Rate of Fire: 950
  • Ammo: 20 (4.6x30mm)
  • Range: Short
  • Attachment Progression: Reflex, Laser Sight, Suppressor, Holographic, Tactical Light, Flash Supp., M145, ACOG, KOBRA, IRNV, PKA-S, PK-A

beginning in the campaign, I can't even get pass the space bar move outside the train - my space bar is not very responsive, nor can I tell how many times I  need to push the space bar...  anybody have any an idea I could try?  I already tried to remap it, and the PC insisted on the spacebar...

@aminal85 L M F A O your funny. hey genius, tell me this, you ever notice that when you do your so called "cooking" that the grenade stays in your hand for an infinite amount of time - and that when you do eventually throw it - it still has the same detonation-time as if you didn't "cook" / hold the grenade button..... ever wonder why that was... here I'll tell you: BECAUSE YOU CAN'T COOK THE NADE. dont go calling people a noob when your the wrong one: scrub.

TheGamer232
TheGamer232

@milan4554 You can change your weapons during game and customize them. Idk what platform your playing on, but for the Xbox 360 its "x" to customize and "b" to change weapon.

@ben_ster and all the noobs that gave him a like. yes actually you can cook grenades on bf3. press the grenade button as usual, then imediately after pull and hold the trigger button to cook it.

You need to include joystick solutions. BF3's so-called PC joystick setting are for game pads. They will actually make your grunt's gun fire nonstop if your joystick is connected because of the way the "fire" button is bound. When will DICE learn to let PC devs code the PC part of the game and send the console devs back to their console worries? So, in order to get real PC joysticks to work, you have to erase (hold esc while in the box) ALL so-called joystick key bindings, then go back and key-bind your real joystick to the vehicles you wish to operate via joystick. Some commands will still be easier from the keyboard such as X for flares, etc. You may still also need to tweak the sensitivity of your devices. I changed mine yesterday and was finally able to fly the chopper without crashing - I hate flying helos/jets with a mouse. So, GS, if you could add something about this for PC BF3'ers, that would be most helpful. Thanks :)

Love B3 but the campaign was over far too quickly without enough vehicle play for me. Multiplayer far better than C.O.D

I'm new to mp. So end up with really poor k/d ratios but love the engineer class, enjoy taking out tanks and choppers. Tho next target's a plane \U0001f609. It's good that you can get points for playing a more supportive role

MISTAKE: the description for the MK11MOD0 rifle is the same as that of the SVD.

@ devastion913 I grabbed it on the PC to test out my new machine ^_^ so the mouse feels a bit awkward for me when flying a jet, as i'm used to consoles. Not to complan, it'll just take a little bit of work. I am finding however, that tanks can absolutely dominate with teamwork, one guy repairs and drives and the other sits on the machine gun watching for little engineers scampering around in the shadows. If you face the tank at the enemies in a choke point and repair from behind while the other guy is shooting, you can keep the tank alive almost indefinately with constant repairs. I finished a match at around 17 - 0 by doing this with some random team member who had the same idea.

devastion913
devastion913

@OverlordGunnar The air vehincles take some work I agree, but what platform are you playing on? On the consoles the legacy stick layout seems to be the easiest for choppers but then once you get a kill in it you have 6 Stinger missles coming your way lol. I end up playing engineer the most too, that and support, using mortars in Rush mode is too hard to resist.

OverlordGunnar
OverlordGunnar

Great game so far (if you ignore the campeign). I generally find myself choosing the engineer class simply because whenever i go with anything else, i find myself in desperate need of a rocket launcher, or i'll jump out of my tank and throw medkits at it before i realize what class i am, that i look like an idiot, and some a$$hole just jacked my ride =p Lag is a problem, and the maps tend to either encourage sniping or result in major rocket battles in narrow choke points which are impossible to break through (metro?). Air vehicles seem a little bit difficult to use (at least for me), has anyone else ever looked up into the sky and witnessed a deranged circus of jets and helicopters spiraling wildly out of control and colliding with one another? It seems a far cry from the terrifyingly lethal attack choppers from battlefield 2. With some practice, however, i'm sure the bar will be raised.

@shanethewolf: True I suppose, but Battlefield has never really been about the story (See Battlefield 2 and before, there were no stories or campaigns at all). DICE isn't the greatest for writing stories. This campaign disappointed me too a bit, but I moved on. Do yourself a favor and play online!

@Fandango_Letho i do attempted its alot of fun to play with your friends but only 4player squad that sucks. im a big fan of Battlefield. ive got BF 1943,BFBC1,BFBC2. sooner or later im still gonna get it back. but not right now its not worth it yet cos when MW3 you cant choose which to play and also UC3.

devastion913
devastion913

@jasonzilla11 It's related to Battlefield and I'm expressing my opinion, is that illegal? The lag is awful and there is no official HC mode, the quickmatch issues are currently being fixed. No, GS can't do anything about it but posting it on Battlefield hasen't done any good either as did posting anything else on other game's sites did. Look at the majority of these comments, they have nothing to do with a game guide either but I don't see you replying to them. Go sit in the corner.

shanethewolf

@Fedorov92 Yes, I think you must be right, I just wished they made it clear the campaign is just an afterthought as I don't play games online.

Fandango_Letho

@milan4554 You're entitled to your opinion, but it's obvious you played little of the game. It's pretty clear that this is not your cup of tea.

soo disappointed on Battlefield 3. what they did not do...changed nothing. 1.squad system up to 6 or 8 players 2.wouldn't let you choose or customize weapon classes during gameplay or after death 3.gameplay not balanced 4.online servers still 5hit 5.graphics similar to MOH and Bad Company 2 6.BF would never win over COD 7.RESPAWN ENTERTAINMENT TEAM the ex-Infinity Ward? employees are making FPS shooter cant wait i got it last Friday 28th then return it today.and gonna get UC3 haha

@shanethewolf, it's not a game you play for the campaign, period.

This feels more like an "interactive movie" than a game. I'm 4 stages in and I feel like I've barely had any control. And that flight mission is abysmal. Reminds me of those old CDI games with the streaming pre-rendered footage and a crosshair. Hope it picks up because I'm regretting wasting my time so far.

@nord calm down. It's not as if they hack your computer and steal your credit card number. Sometimes you need to trade inconsequential privacy for new technology. Besides, ever since the patriot act much more important private information than what settings your computer is on have been compromised.

jasonzilla11

@devastion913 And how does that connect with a guide? It's not like GS can do anything about it. Complaining on here doesn't help anything.

I want the MP7 and everyone I know either has it on PC or doesnt and wont even get it! What do I do?! I play with PS3!

devastion913
devastion913

I could care less about all of this I just want them to fix the lag problems and issues with the quickmatch. Also, why is there not an official hardcore game mode like in BC2? There are ranked hardcore servers but they are a pain to get in andthey vary in settings. Hardcore with a minimap is not hardcore.

So we have to play co-op to unlock certain weapons? About how long does it take to obtain 441,000 co-op score, because that sounds kind of agonizingly time consuming for a mode I won't play more than 10 - 20 times (even if it is quality).

I have a hard time getting all the pc controls down. You don't really have a ton of time in-game to look at your controls, so a guide on what buttons do what would be nice. For example, I had to google search how to spot on the pc, which btw is the Q key. Knowing how to switch seats in a vehicle would be nice too, so that I could switch to the turret on the humvee etc, when there are no passengers. Just little things like this that you seem to have to find out as you play can be somewhat frustrating.

i'm not reading through all of it to ask this, but is this just a database or are there information given by the editors, like tips and whatnot? if it's the latter, then you definitely will need a vehicles section.
