Best Online-Only Game
Winner: Acrophobia
"Acrophobia provides Net users with a stimulating, fast-paced way to waste eons of time. It appeals to an audience larger than the sum of its chat and gamer constituents, providing an atmosphere of spontaneity absent from most Internet and game-related experiences." - Sean Kelly, GameSpot Staffer

Besides being a fun and very addictive game, the great thing about Acrophobia is the social experience. The game is paced in such a way that there's plenty of opportunity to exchange remarks or make small talk before, during, and after rounds. And if you don't vote, the votes you receive for your entries aren't recorded. Participation is required. Also, it's not uncommon to find players encouraging others or making congratulatory remarks for creative Acros. All this makes playing Acrophobia more like being in a room full of people having fun than seriously competing in a game. It's challenging, quick to learn, and something every online game should be - fun!
Runner-up: NetWAR
"With this online-only shoot-'em-up, there's no need for grandiose strategy or complicated maneuvers; all you've got to do to have fun is start running and gunning." - Stephen Poole, GameSpot Review
NetWAR was selected based on its fast-paced action, variety of game modes and characters types, and its cool power-ups. Forget the rocket launcher and double-barrel shotgun; in NetWAR your arsenal includes tanks, flamethrowing helicopters, and jetpacks. Sadly, the power-ups are only available to purchasers of the full version of the game (a shareware version is also available). With four modes of gameplay and four different characters to choose from (including a disgruntled postal worker), variety keeps the action fresh in NetWAR. Because latency is the key to what kind of experience you'll have playing any action game online, your connection is thoughtfully measured for each arena so you can see what kind of lag you'll experience before you head in for some action.
