Puzzles and Classics Game of the Year

You Don't Know Jack: The Ride
Publisher: Berkeley Systems
Developer: Jellyvision

"You Don't Know Jack demands to be recognized as a landmark gaming series."
- Vince Broady, GameSpot Review

Everyone remembers when the first You Don't Know Jack came out. This completely irreverent trivia game breathed new life into the puzzle game genre and made answering questions almost as fun as shouting at Alex Trebek every night. Over the years, the gang at Jellyvision released version after version of the game, capitalizing on its success, but never really doing anything different. With You Don't Know Jack Vol. 3, many thought the series, though consistently solid, was finally running out of steam. The pop-culture references were growing tiresome, the humor seemed predictable, and the questions lacked the ability to surprise and entertain as they once had.

This year, Jellyvision, gave us a game that's unique and fun, while still maintaining the basic feel of the series. The Ride refers to a ride on an elevator, which drops you off at different thematic "floors," which serve as the subject for any given game. The theme-based games are truly fun, and a big improvement over the more random questions in past games. In addition, the developers have added new question types and formats and a money randomizer, which keeps you banging your keyboard for hours. The Ride definitely ventures into adult subject matter and is filled with sexual innuendo, mature themes, and deleted expletives. Your faithful hosts have become even more bitter, cynical, and sarcastic than the past - even typing in your name is fraught with peril.

With a nice graphics overhaul and an innovative new question format, you won't want to get off this ride.
