Driving Game of the Year
Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Developer: Electronic Arts
"Not only is the latest Need for Speed miles ahead of the last Need for Speed, but it approaches (and dare I say surpasses?), the best of the consoles in terms of sheer fun and speed." - Elliott Chin, GameSpot Review
1998 was a great year for driving games. Both arcade driving games and hardcore simulations saw their share of excellent releases. On the arcade front, Microsoft's motorcycle game gave our winner a run for its money, and on the simulation side of the driving genre, Grand Prix Legends dazzled with its combination of physics and gameplay. Yet, when the dust settled, the one game that zoomed through the checkered flag was Need for Speed III.
For pure racing action and unadulterated fun, Need for Speed III was hard to beat. The name has stood for fun arcade racing on the PC for several years. When Need for Speed II was released a few years ago, it looked like the name was beginning to get tarnished, but Need for Speed III's mix of speed, various tracks and racing environments, and exotic cars made for an unbeatable combo. Multiplayer races were also fun, capturing that arcade feel that is so hard to recreate on the PC. And not only did the game capture the best of arcade racing, it also brought back the police cars from the first Need for Speed. You could race against the computer, your friends, your ghost car, or the police. You could pick more than a dozen expensive cars - Ferraris, Porsches, Lamborghinis - and race in the desert, woods, mountains, and city streets. And even if you forget about all those options for a second, it all comes down to this: Need for Speed III was very fast and very fun.
