Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Edition
ATI has been showing off its six-monitor behemoth for some time, and it's finally ready for consumption. Today, ATI released the Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Edition. As a GPU, the card is pretty much a regular Radeon HD 5870 except with 2GB of GDDR5 memory and the ability to support six monitors simultaneously. The regular Radeon HD 5870 supports three monitors and has 1GB of RAM. ATI expects immediate availability and has priced the card at $479.
The Details
850MHz Core
1600 Stream Processors
2GB of GDDR5 RAM
1200MHz RAM
6 x Mini DisplayPort Outputs
The Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinty 6 Edition has six Mini DisplayPort connectors on the back, and like with previous Radeon HD 5000 series parts, you will need to connect a DisplayPort monitor somewhere in the mess, or at least purchase active DisplayPort adapters for DVI/HDMI/VGA monitors, which generally run for about $100 apiece. You can connect up to two monitors with passive adapters, then the rest have to be native DisplayPort or connected via active adapters. Included in the package are 2x Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort adapters, 2x passive link DisplayPort to DVI dongles, and one Mini DisplayPort to HDMI dongle.
Monitor Setup
When everything arrived it was as though our office had turned into a warehouse--boxes were everywhere. Six monitors and two monitor mounts require a lot of packaging. The monitors took a few hours to set up, and expect to spend even more time if you want to do the job with OCD levels of correctness. Monitor mounts require lots of adjustments to set up perfectly; otherwise you're left with minor gaps and imperfections rather unbefitting of such a costly beast.
The Total
Speaking of price--if the video card has you trembling, we've only just begun to add up everything. ATI sent six Dell P2210H monitors, each of which costs $220. Then we need to factor in the mounts, because you will need something to put these things on. Also in the package were the Adtec V-FS-Q (a $300 quad monitor stand) and the Adtec V-FS-DV (a $140 dual monitor stand). The quad was an absolute pain the neck to set up. Adjusting and setting up the dual stand was far, far easier. Seeing as the cost is pretty much the same, if we had to do it over again, we'd go with three duals and live with two extra feet sticking out.
6 x $220 Dell P2210H Monitors + $300 Adtec V-FS-Q + $140 Adtec V-FS-DV + $480 Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Edition = $2240
Software Setup
ATI has done a decent job of making six monitors play nicely, but the experience could definitely stand some improvement. The drivers make it easy to set up a single group of monitors, like one big six-monitor setup at 5760x2160. Putting together multiple groups is frustrating though. You'll have to disable monitors and then re-add them to groups. The only problem is that the monitor symbols don't translate to anything meaningful, which means you'll be doing some guesswork to select the right ones. Once that's done, you can save profiles to the desktop that let you quickly switch between groups of monitors (1x6, 2x3, and so on), but even there we encountered minor issues with incorrect loads and crashing. ATI is working relatively quickly to address issues, so we imagine that everything should get smoother as time goes on. The technology is quite young, so expect to encounter more than your fair share of bugs when it comes to launching games and adjusting settings.would only beat a tv if there were no bezels
nice" , like grapichs"
why not just buy a huge 65 inch lcd??
Thats so stupid. 6 monitors with 20FPS each, or one 60" monitor with 100 fps. Which one would you pick?
Wow! They make 16:9 look like living in a burqa.
i never had a high end graphic card but i do have an xbox 360
i'd rather spend my extra bucks on an apple 30" HD cinema display :D or even get a 50" HD tv to play on :P and turn on my AA to 8x with 1920*1080 that will be better then getting a load bunch of small screens even if the resolution is higher
Beasty, although I'd still spend my money on a 22" + monitor and a high end GPU (Nvidia or ATI I don't mind)
What you gain from the higher resolution is far outweighed by tha bezels and crappy frame rate. Years ago I tried a dual monitor setup for Gal Civ II and the bezel drove me nuts, thats just with a turn based game, I wouldn't even think of playing an action game on it.
gelugon baat it shouldnt take up any more space than your 4890. i have a 4870x2 and ive been looking to upgrade it to a 5970. its all about getting more power from a smaller package with new generations of video cards due to shrinking die sizes on processors.
I wonder how huge the GPU is. My Radeon 4890 is already taking 20% of remaining casing space after the Motherboard and CPU have been installed.
Wow, those huge aspect ratios really make for some ease at spotting enemies trying to flank you.
Playing HON on that would suck
These experiences interesting because it focuses in particular on the pixel which is one of the most important factors that give a clear picture, but the problem is that there no video card capable of running the game with this number of pixels!!! Although it must occupy at least 30 frames per second and that's for sure requires 3 or more monitors. Where is the graphics card that ??!!!!
Come on Gamespot, lets have a quiz/contest for members to win 6 dell monitors and a game card!!!
It looks nice, except for the "black border" that comes along with it...
That's just Awesome! I'd only need 3 monitors to really heighten my gaming experience. 6 monitors seems like a waste of resources.
not bad

Tried with 3 on my HD5970 and I just don't like it, but still it's a cool thing and it would be nice to have at work :P
gaming like that would not work competitively. but for windowed applications it would rock.
sick but the bezel sux
Cheers @daman1616
OK, I have been gaming on PC's for as long as gaming on PC's has been in existience. That being said, I'm a huge techy and I love new technologies! This is it! I have never been so excited! I tried 3d gaming back in the 90's and then again recently with Nvidia's 3D technology. (which really wasn't that different then the 90's) and it's no where near the coolness as this set up! I have 3 monitors, spread out, expanding my game world! It's awesome! Don't listen to the bevel argument because it's nonsense! You are always focused on the center monitor, and therefore the side monitors just act as your peripheral vision. With that being said, if something catches your eye you instantly turn to it and place it in your main monitor. You see, side montitors are just like real life, the key word is , peripheral! It works awesome and has completely changed the way I think about gaming!!!! MORE DIRECT X11 GAMES PLEASE!!!!!!!
All of you dumbies saying get a big TV instead obviously know nothing so why don't you go back to playing your consoles. You cannot get the kind of resolution from 1 monitor that you can running more than one across eyefinity. And @biggy887766, if you actually read this "review" (I don't consider gamespot to be a PC hardware review site) then you would've seen the pictures detailling the difference between lower (single screen) resolutions compared to multi monitor resolutions. And obviously you haven't been playing PC for very long, if ever, because game developpers have had games with ability to display 2560x1600 resolutions for a long time. 1080p is not even a standard PC monitor format, it is a TV format. DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHYUP. Until you can buy me a single screen with a resolution of 5760x2400 then shaddup. They should've used some 16:10 monitors instead of 16:9 for this review.... I realize this site is more geared towards console gaming but common man, can you guys please learn something before posting stupid comments. PC gaming is way better than consoles by the way. Who wants to play BFBC2 @ 720p when you can play it on a PC across 3 or 6 screens! mmmm...
seems kinda pointless...buy 6 monitors and run higher res with lower fps or buy one big monitor with plain old 1080p and run at higher fps. You won't notice any difference in graphics quality until developers actually start making games in 1080p + res. No reason to buy this now...in 5 or 10 years we'll see
there is no way i would game with this unless there were bezel-less monitors.
Real hardware sites (like HardOCP). Have done multiple eyefinity 6 reviews.. but ofcourse they used monitors where there wasn't such a border around each monitor so you can see more easily! You can actually see during FPS games!
alot of u guys seriously need to learn something and stop saying that it's better to just buy a huge monitor ok huge monitor ress sucks really bad it's just no comperason with a multiple monitor setup like this
one step closer for a room full of monitors...NICE!!!! its all about aspect ratio and pixels...if a tv can go 23fps ill get em...until then 6 monitor for me!!!!
@ grimsdaddy6065 DUDE!!! My 5850 owns the game called Metro 2033, this card will be an overkill for it. Only reason games lag a bit is because all games like Nvidia fanboys and nvidia inserts some files purposely so that games run slow on ATI cards. Nvidia are very mean manufacturers. Always go for ATI. ATI RULEZZ.........
"Why not get one big ass monitor instead?" Well... Do you know any monitor with a wider than 2:1 aspect ratio that will give you 5000 pixels in width? That's the beauty of this system. Putting them in two rows is lame, a row of three is all it takes to awesomeness!
23fps gaming on 6 monitors, or 60+fps on 50" monitor. Easy pickings imo
Why spend your money to get six monitors , An epic computer plus an adapter for the monitors that costs like 100$ , and then what? It's a hell of a lot easier to do this on one flat-screen TV
Yeah, but your everyday 40" from the local hardware shop wont go to 5760x2160... GIVE ME MORE RES!!!
I agree with haydergm, it may be a hassle to set up six when one quality LED tv can do the task. Fewer wires, probably less set up time. I'd like this if I were daytrading,but...gaming--let's stick with TV
Wow this is so luxurious. Really shows a quality of ATI.
NVdia GTX 480 support triple monitor only with Dual-Card SLI configuration, because one card only support dual display. Actually i'm a NVidia fan, but ATi is doing great with this one! And for your info, multi-monitor not only used for gaming like most of you here, but they're very useful for trading companies. Bad for gaming, good for business I say!
WHY I want to use 6 monitors When I can buy 40" LED TV with better Results???????????!!!!!
Why not get one big ass monitor instead?
This is a gaming card aimed at trying to impress gamers with something which would only be good if it had seamless monitors, but bear in mind how much six monitors plus the psu and all other connections would take to run for lets say a year?? Wait til u got your own house kids, ur mum will kill you. Would be superb to show off with though admittedly.
Lol each screen now it a pixel D: damn HD.. XD
Some body should make a 60" 5760x2160 monitor and get it over with. Or even a 5760x1080. This setup is just a tad bit ridiculous. I saw a lot of people commenting about the bezels and yeah, they are pretty bad. No one wants their corsair obscured by a big bad black band running through their screen. PC gaming IS all about immersion. You sit close to your monitor, you put on a headset, and you block everything else out. I just can't see myself sitting 2 ft away from this setup and trying to ignore the bezels or even the power LEDs on the monitors. Yes it's fancy and new and awesome in it's own right, but is it functional? No, it's preliminary. Give it a year or two and we'll have one screen with the capabilities of these 6. And then people will probably put 6 of THOSE bad boys together, and so on and so forth and etc... Have a nice life.

I guess this card is something excessive for "normal" gamer, unless you are a wicked sick one. most games do not need such a creature to run well. regarding 2 or 3 monitors, it does not sound that exciting either. In my case, I`d rather prefer to make an investment into huge 46 or 50" led Full HD TV/Monitor, which will give you much more joy for a while, and, in addition, you can use it with PC or any platform...
This is SICK dude!!! WOW!!! well if we talkin about professional graphic designer. This is too much for gaming... I mean not meant for gaming especially for FPS. But this is really a sick card. ^_^
could this run metro 2033 on mex settings in dx11 on one monitor?
