E3 2009 came back in brute force: big crowds, big announcements, and a truckload of showstoppers. In no particular order, we've gathered up some of the more notable moments. Not all of them are games or products, or even great for that matter, but each one certainly was a spectacle unto itself.

The Beatles: Rock Band

Ringo Starr. Paul McCartney. Yoko Ono. We could probably stop right there. Anything with an introduction like that won't be forgotten. Just to make sure, Harmonix went one step further and re-created Abbey Road Studios on the show floor of E3. The Beatles came to E3 as rock stars and walked away as video game icons.

Extra Moments:

Hideo Kojima

The man announced Metal Gear Solid Rising for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Sony's loss of exclusivity with this enormous franchise cannot be overstated. The game that moves consoles is now on two major consoles. In addition, Kojima Productions is also on the hook for Metal Gear: Peace Walker, a PSP-only title. If that weren't enough from the man, he's also there to help out on Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.

Extra Moments:

Splinter Cell: Conviction

Splinter Cell is evolving. The series that usually has you skulking around in the dark ups the tempo in the latest title, Conviction. Almost like the Bionic Man, Sam Fisher will now be faster, have more-visceral moves, and be highly improvisational to the point of being able to dole out death by urinal.

Extra Moments:

Microsoft's Project Natal

Microsoft's Project Natal stunned audiences at E3 2009 with its accuracy and versatility. When Peter Molyneux makes a demo to show off Microsoft's motion controller, you know something big is up. It was almost unbelievable the way Molyneux's emo computer child, Milo, interacted with an actual person. The emotions conveyed by the character went beyond anything currently available, and the coup de grace occurred when the woman communicating with Milo literally handed him a drawing of a fish. In another demo that showed off Natal's capabilities, stage demonstrators painted a jungle scene onto the screen using various colors. The defining moment took place when two folks stepped onto the stage to form a sort of shadow-puppet elephant that was then imported into the digital painting.

Extra Moments:

The Wii Vitality Sensor

In what was probably one of the oddest announcements of the show, Nintendo's new Vitality Sensor arrived and then disappeared just as quickly. One moment the president of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata, was talking about expanding the gaming audience, and the next moment he was speaking about heartbeats with a shot his finger stuck in the Vitality Sensor as the backdrop. Then, just as quickly, the presentation shifted gears to Mario. The sneak peek left us with tons of questions, most of which remain unanswered.

Extra Moments:

Metroid: Other M

A Metroid game is always a big deal. But this year Nintendo made it even bigger. The company handed the reins of the franchise, quite unexpectedly, to Team Ninja, the developers made famous by their work on the Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive franchises. From the game footage shown off at E3, it's clear that Metroid: Other M is going in a new direction that's likely to be well received.

Extra Moments:

The Sony PSP Go

By Sony's own acknowledgment, the PSP Go was the worst-kept gaming secret of E3 2009. As a result, its unveiling from Kaz Hirai's pocket brought about a less-than-enthusiastic response. With 16GB of storage space and a more pocketable form factor than the original PSP, the device looks great, but it's relatively clear that the public is somewhat disappointed with one key spec: the price point. On the bright side, Sony dropped the price of the PSP development kit by 80 percent, which should ease developer costs and bring even more games to the handheld.

Extra Moments:

The PS3 Motion Controller

Project Natal definitely set expectations for motion controllers at E3, but Sony's prototype motion controller also turned a few eyes. Like with Microsoft's motion controller, details such as pricing and availability were scarce as the entire demo was meant to show off how the technology works. Sony's new motion tracking technology basically functions by using cameras to track a controller with a lit bulb at the end of it. The real kicker is being able to dual-wield them to pull off combination movements, such as those necessary for a bow and arrow or a sword and shield.

Extra Moments:

Avatar Demo from James Cameron

James "I made Terminator, Aliens, and the Abyss" Cameron. The name inspires awe, and how can it not when you've attached crazed homicidal robots and aliens with acid for blood to it. When Ubisoft trotted out the acclaimed director to talk about Avatar the game, expectations were set. Popcorn and soda at the ready, we waited. And waited. Instead of a spectacle, we got a book reading, sans book. While the man gave a great description of Avatar, a video, a picture, or even a crudely drawn cat on a napkin would have been a nice accompaniment.

Extra Moments:

Scribblenauts

Scribblenauts stole the show at E3 2009. Oddly enough, it did so without the help of a big announcement, or even a mention at any of the major press conferences. Scribblenauts came out of left field, and more than a few editors were stunned. You play the game as a little boy trying to collect stars by any means necessary. Using the DS's stylus you can write just about anything into existence. If the star is in a tree, you can cut the tree down, get a ladder, or even sic a beaver on it. It sounds both crazy and impossible, and yet it works.

Extra Moments:

What was your favorite moment at E3 2009?

scribblenauts is gonna be a hit! Wii Vitality Sensor is gonna be very awesome. You can imagine how the Nintendo games are going to be played. Project Natal is going to be interesting also. Lots of 360 lover could imagine what hit games will be like using Project Natal. PSP Go looks like it is going to fail!

I think it's funny how everybody puts playstation over yeah playstation does have great games coming out the thing is, they threw all they had out on the table so now what do they have to surprise people with. Whats their plan B to help them maintain during the dead months b4 everything comes out. Microsoft was smart they threw out something they knew people would cheer for while keeping some of their other stuff under wraps. If you think Microsoft is in third place just take a look at their XBL lineup you don't even have to mention the 360 games. PS3 is cool but when comparing to 360 their basically on equal ground. Plus for all the PS3 fanboys Technology doesn't mean anything look at what happened to sega. With Sony their are losing all their exclusives to microsoft.

Ever heard of eye toy for the playstation like 5 years ago? Natal's got some cool features but I doubt it'll last, depends how much the developers think they can use it and how much the Xbox crowd actually want to jump around in front on the tv.

Clearly some good stuff coming from everywhere! Should be a very exciting year. Looking forward to seeing Project Natal, but needs some good support to shine through. Also VERY please to see The Last Guardian, a sequel to two of the most beautiful and original games of last gen. Who cares 'who beat who.' Aren't we all gamers at the end of the day? Fanboys should grow up and get their whining lil' as$$es outta kindergarten.

    Sony? Right...
Microsoft announces a hand full of features coming to their... not... failing console, the likes to which Sony couldn't have done if they wanted to. They announced that they acquired yet another one of your beloved "exclusives", and they announce a project that right off the bat seems a lot better than both the Wii and the PS3's motion controlled games. In that, they also had a handful of games to announce.

Sony, as was to be expected, started off and maintained pretty consistent attention on the fact that their PS2 was still doing great, made a ton of excuses why it was still doing great (none of which were anywhere near the real one, which we all know), announce a ton of new PS2 titles, oh yeah, and near the end, decide to throw in a few extras, one or two that might actually include their "hallmark system", PS3.

Microsoft took this E3, don't trick yourself.

  • BalramRules

    Posted Jun 25, 2009 6:55 am PT

Sony clearly had the best E3:
    1. PSP Go!
    2. PS3 Motion Controllers
    3. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and God of War III (Two of the best PS3 Exclusives to come out this year)!
    4. DC Universe Online and The Agency (Two of the best PS3 MMOs to come out on PS3 this year or the next)!
    5. Assassin's Creed II and Batman: Arkham Asylum (Two of my favourite PS3 games in the E3)!
    6. LittleBigPlanet 2 and Assassin's Creed Bloodlines (Two of my favourite PSP Exclusives coming out this year)!

    That's it from me pals!
The only good thing in Microsoft's E3 was Project Natal, and in Nintendo's this wasn't even that good but the Wii Motion Plus attachment, I didn't even think that was good at all? Who did?

The lack of any mention of God of War 3, Mass Effect 2, Forza 3, or Gran Turismo 5 renders this article pointless, IMO. Sure, the things that are mentioned here were memorable, but tell me....whose jaw DIDN'T drop when Kratos ripped the horn off of that creature and stabbed him with it??? That was one of the coolest things I've ever seen ANYWHERE, and it is probably going to make me, a 360 guy, buy a PS3!

As for E3 itself, I thought it was a great show all around. I think everyone is going to get some things that they enjoy, no matter what system you prefer. Being a longtime gamer who enjoys a little bit of everything myself, I can't wait for some of this stuff to hit. All I can say at the end of the day is that it is a damn good time to be a gamer!

Why not just join together to make one kick-ass computer that can be easily upgraded and added to as the years go by, then just worry about making games, applications and peripherals for it.....?
What 'new technology' will be on show next year? Maybe you'll be able to burn your own CDs, DVDs, Dual Layer & blu ray?
Watch Digital TV? Maybe a nice printer for your console? Play multiplayer with more than 16 people?
Get with it people! I'm tired of waiting and being spoon fed technology.... give us the future!

  • djbarracuda2004

    Posted Jun 24, 2009 2:11 am PT

This E3 was a good one no doubt, but aren' t you getting tired of it all?
I've had a pc for donkey's years and could play multiplayer games with 100+ players, talk to people via camera, voice, or using avatars or programs like facebook, watch & record digital tv, process digital media, shop, download music, games and films, have voice recognition, and even controllers with motion sensors long before even the ps3 & xbox360 were a twinkle in their respective developers eye - all theese things are slowly being crept out on to the consoles as major advancements!
Consoles are becoming pc's, and pc's have always been more than capable of matching the consoles' graphical capabilities and infact, emulating consoles effortlessly .
It's time people stopped arguing about which console is best, because any argument is null and void thanks to the power of a humble pc, and high time the developers started working together to push technology forward. Imagine a console that can do everything a pc could and still be as quick and easy as a console - it could even recognise you as you entered the room and have a graphical virtual intelligence interface instead of Windows, like Microsofts' Milo!

I love that guy who called mainstream gamers 'dumb gamers.' Sorry we don't spend 4-6 hours a day on WoW or GoW or Halo or whatever is considered 'hardcore.' Seriously, some people think that 'hardcore' is like the aryian race or something, and now that these other people want to enjoy themselves by playing video games they're losers. Why are there so many people who like to just yell at other people for liking certain games or companies. Get over yourselves. Let other people enjoy what they want to enjoy.

"Looks like some Sony PS fanatics are giving bad comment ratings to whoever is praising MS Xbox announcements."

Just like MS fanboys give negative ratings things not positive of 360. gush over lame natal presentation and 360 some other 360 presentations that was obviously donkeyknutz. Jaeboy, you iz dumm azz. Wow.
I, for one give bad comment ratings for those I believe is either an azz or is wrong, regardless of console preference.

Sorry but you guys are in denial so much you didnt realize MS placed 3rd!!!! at E3 , the console war, and in games. I have all 3 systems, PS3 is by far better than anything MS has going. 1. PS3(best games ,content , blu ray, motion control(6 Axis), WiFi, Internet Browser, free online FOREVA ,covers price with blu ray) 2. Wii (Great for families, most exclusives, most sold,WIFI, internet browser, FREE ONLINE FOREVA ,some exercise) 3.360 (Just a PS3 MINUS blu ray, great games, WIFI , free online, content, cover its price). Also feat. AVATARS Copying PS Home and the Wiis "Mii"
