Methodology

Buzz is calculated by using a weighted sum of five measures (users, page views, keyword searches, video streams and total new users tracking) obtained via GameSpot Trax over the four days of E3 plus the day after (6/1/09 - 6/5/09). All games scheduled to release between June 7th 2009 and December 31st 2010 were considered. The treemap data visualization was created by identifying the top 100 games with E3 buzz and then grouping those games by publisher. The area of the rectangle is proportional to the amount of buzz. The Top 10 Publishers was calculated by comparing the sum total of all buzz for all games released in the 19 month window by publisher. The Top 10 Biggest Gainers was calculated by comparing buzz in the month of May 2009 with Buzz during the 5 days of E3, while the Top 10 New Arrivals was calculated by identifying the games revealed during E3 with the most buzz. For the actual data points used in the buzz calculations, visit GameSpot Trax, or for more information about GameSpot Trax email trax@gamespot.com.
