Super Mario never gets old, but as Nintendo's Wii is about to prove with Super Mario Galaxy, it sometimes gets very new. You'll run upside down within the gravitational fields of tiny planetoids, hurl yourself through space on the cosmic rays of blue dwarf stars, and trounce Bowser in a bid to rescue the Mushroom Kingdom from his evil clutches. You'll get to do all this while solving brain teasing puzzles, bashing behemoth bosses, and searching the celestial skies for mystery, magic and fun.

It seems like Mario sure has come a long way since his last adventure in Super Mario Sunshine, but is Super Mario Galaxy's starry sojourn a quantum leap beyond his last adventure or simply the next logical step? To answer these questions, we entered the dangerous waters of graphical comparison, and what we found astounded us. Indeed, Super Mario Galaxy is a great-looking game, but Super Mario Sunshine was too. While Galaxy may far surpass its predecessor in some areas, it's graphically part of the same Super Mario tradition; one that proves it's not the size of your graphical processor that matters, but what you butt-stomp with it.

Mario

Mario packed extra weight in Sunshine thanks to his handy water blaster called FLUDD - a strange device that let him clean poluted surfaces, stun enemies, sprint and briefly hover. In Galaxy, on the other hand, he has a tiny star called a luma, which grants him the power to spin punch, pelt enemies with star bits, soar through gravitational fields and not die from a lack of atmosphere. Most importantly, the luma lives in Mario's stomach, so he no longer looks like a wannabe ghost buster.

It's a-he, Marrrio!

Space

We don't know what was going on in some of Sunshine's space levels. After all, you could simply look up at the night sky and see that there were no train tracks. Still, it's important to note that Sunshine's disembodied space levels provided the seeds for what would grow into an awesome new game devoted to the outer limits, Super Mario Galaxy.

Boldly going where no plumber has gone before.

Death

When Mario inexorably fell from the aforementioned space levels in Sunshine, he simply fell and fell, then we assume, fell some more. For all we know, he fell for five years before landing back in the Mushroom Kingdom, just in time for Super Mario Galaxy. Sunshine's deaths lacked closure, but Galaxy's do not, and closure comes in the form of giant black holes that suck Mario circularly into their fatal embrace, presumably squishing him into a fine Italian space paste. What a good-looking way to go.

Now featuring black holes!

Victory

Mario's alleged profession is plumber, but ever since Super Mario 64 he's been a dedicated star catcher. He always gets very excited when he finds one and even does little dances. In Sunshine, these are accompanied by the cryptic word "Shine!" On the other hand, Galaxy is super obvious with the message, "You got a star!" Neither one actually compliments you for defeating the giant boss or figuring out the tricky puzzle, but at least they both look nice and happy.

In both cases, victory looks sweet.

Stars

Speaking of stars, they employ brilliant lighting effects in both games. It's easy to just run up and grab 'em, but if you take a second, you'll notice that these heavenly bodies received quite a bit of graphical attention and care. Aside from their slick gold surfaces, each has a radiant halo, pierced with subtle beams of light and rainbow sparkles. Nintendo's art designers deserve a gold star.

Star light, star bright, you won't get either, without a fight.

What they don't show you is the frame rate. If you play sunshine and then play galaxy, then you feel like "WHOA MAN"! I think that a trick they used in sunshine to get better graphics was that they tried to avoid curved surfaces. tktomo01 is right. Galaxy graphics do look better when you're playing.

Those screens don't do Galaxy justice. In motion the game looks 100 times better. Even so, both are great games.

after some thought, i may like sunshine better than galaxy
the water mechanic was cool and it was on a big planet, not lot's of tiny ones
galaxy was great, sunshine was better.

SMS never catched my attention, i played some levels, got some stars, but still it did not make me want to end it (and besides, the big-nosed guys from the islands were never mentioned before or after the game. Galaxy instead, is a whole new gameplay, extremely fun, a linear game, but is so good that you can barely notice that is linear and that's what makes it the winner of this comparission

Remember that the Wii is being played on an LCD screen. They don't do too well when playing games or watching videos below their native resolution. If the Wii were being played on the same type of TV Mario Sunshine was, then you'd see a BIG difference.

The screenshots clearly aren't as good as what it looks like in person. SMG blows SMS away in graphics.. but it is about the gameplay, both of which. rock

super mario 64=5 stars.the graphical power is intense, the game is extremely long, and very chalenging. super mario sunshine=4 stars.it is all very good, much like mario 64 but lacks camera control, and the colors could get washed out sometimes.

super mario galexy=5stars. i was expecting it to be a bit cleche, but it turned out better than super mario 64 and the graphics, the sound, and even the stars have emotion!! i love super mario galexy and all the rest but id have to say that super mario galexy is the best.

hope you enjoyed my proffesional review!!!

GO MARIO!! FOR NOW AND FOREVER!!!

both are worth 5 stars but super mario galaxy has really amasing way to play and team up and looks like an dream world.
but sunshine has our adoroble partner yoshi and the sea wants me to swim in it and the clever patner fludd.
but have you notist that mario is longer than in sunshine?
well i have to say galaxy is the best but sunshine will allways be in marios history and past.
    GO MARIO GO!!!

the stars? they always looked the same didn't they... the eyes and round edges.

I noticed that Nintendo made Mario have facial expressions in Galaxy... makes the game have more feel to it.

Graphics does not make a good game. Yeah it helps, but gameplay makes tha game. If super mario galaxy had the worse gameplay and the best graphics. Would it still be good. NO. So i think Super mario galaxy is better. Because it has better gameplay and (sigh) better graphics.!!!

Wow, Sunshine and Galaxy look really alike in terms of quality...
Of course, if Gamespot really wanted to do a decent comparison, they'd make one of those video ones like they do for comparing the same game across different platforms.
Whooda thunk that Mario would come so far, yet change so little at the same time. *Sniff* he's grown so fast...

An (edited in) afterthought: Why does Petey Piranha/Dino Piranha wear creepy underpants? Can't he just stick his butt in the ground and preserve what little dignity he has (sadly, not much; this is Mario, after all)?

it may seem from the pictures that the diference is minute, but these pictures dont do justice, when u actually play the game u see how big the difference is

  • diving_devil46

    Posted Nov 27, 2007 5:04 am PT

    Oh and REALLY OFF-TOPIC BUT....

I actually agreed with Geoff on twilight princess, I am not by any means saying it was a bad game; but when you look at how new galaxy feels compared to older mario's; you just wish TP took just a few more risks... oh and on Mario it doesn't matter as much, but i do feel TP should have been just a touch harder considering how refined the controls feel (in my opinion anyway, they work beautifully).

    ON-Topic

But yeah Galaxy is just an instant classic. I still play through all of the MB's now and again (other than sunshine actually) and i see Galaxy joining the collection of games that you will just now and then want to go back too, even if it is just to revisit a neat trick you found on your first play through.

I really can't stress how giddy this game makes me feel (if i may use a unique term). It's just so refreshing and exhilirating.

"i have played galaxy as with all nintedo games great fun if you are a 10yr old kid but all nintendo homebrew are to childish for my likeing ninteno for the kids 360/ps3 for the adults " Quote

I am getting fed up with this closed minded opinion. I happen to have a 360 and a Wii. And you honestly can not even begin to cmpare the systems, it just should not be done, they are both pitching in very different leagues for starters.

And second of all... I am 20, I have a mate whose 24 and married, and we both absolutely LOVE galaxy. Is it a touch on the easy side? Yes. Is it insanely fun and the best platformer to hit any system in a very long time? Absolutely!!

This game really does blow away the standards for platforming; and once its running on a hd widescreen it actually looks really slick and smooth for what it is. There isn't a huge difference between galaxy and shine but their are some subtle touches that just smooth out the rough edges that shine had such as smoother edges, reflective services, some texture detail, better defined stars, much more varied levels.

In short, Galaxy is a must have for any Wii owner - whether you are 10 or 100.

if the topic is graphics then theres really not much difference which is kind of sad because galaxy is on a "new " which is suppose to be more powerful. but if the topic is fun then i say galaxy is just way better anyway. you don't need top notch graphics to have a great game but the little extra eye candy doesnt hurt. when have you ever heard somebody complain that that they game was fun but..the graphics were too good?
