The video game industry's worst kept secret is finally out. Microsoft has today announced that it's adding the Xbox 360 Elite to its current console lineup. The $479 Xbox 360 Elite will join the $299 Xbox 360 Core and the $399 Xbox 360 Premium as Microsoft's high-end console offering. The Elite will be a permanent addition to the Xbox 360 lineup, not a limited-edition offering as rumors have speculated.

UPDATE: The Xbox 360 Elite's pricing has now been confirmed for the UK. You can find details here.

Microsoft has equipped the new Xbox with a 120GB hard drive and an HDMI port to make the 360 comparable to the PlayStation 3. The Xbox 360 Elite won't be replacing either of the current models, mostly because its advanced feature set is designed to appeal to enthusiasts and early adopters--the two consumer groups willing to spend more than $399 on a game console.

System Comparison

We've put together a comparison table to show you the differences between all three Xbox 360 console packages.

Xbox 360 EliteXbox 360 PremiumXbox 360 Core
Price$479$399$299
FinishBlack w/ chrome trimWhite w/ chrome trimWhite w/ plain trim
Hard drive120GB20GBNone
ControllerWireless, blackWireless, whiteWired, white
Xbox Live HeadsetYesYesNo
HDMI portYesNoNo
HDMI cableYesNoNo
Composite AV cableYesYesYes
Component HD AV cableYesYesNo
Ethernet cableYesYesNo

The entry-level Core system offers just enough to play games. It comes with the base console and a wired controller, but it only has composite AV cables and doesn't have a hard drive or headset. The Xbox 360 Premium system comes with a 20GB hard drive, a wireless controller, HD component AV cables, and a headset. The Core and Premium systems can only output 1080p movies through a special VGA cable, but some 1080p displays have HDMI inputs instead of VGA. Component video is capped at 1080i for motion picture content.

The Xbox 360 Elite has a 120GB hard drive and a new HDMI port that supports 1080p movie playback. The larger hard drive lets console owners store more games and HD video content downloaded from Xbox Live Marketplace. Note that the Elite system does not have a built-in HD-DVD player, which is somewhat puzzling since even the basic $499 PlayStation 3 comes with a Blu-ray drive.

Aside from the hard drive and HDMI differences, Microsoft has told GameSpot that the underlying hardware in all three models remains the same. We're all going to have to wait a little while longer for that smaller, cooler CPU design.

Accessories

The Xbox 360 Elite has a new black and chrome color scheme, and the package includes a matching black wireless controller and headset. Additional black, wireless controllers will retail for $49. Microsoft will also sell black Xbox 360 Play & Charge kits and Xbox 360 rechargeable accessories separately for $19 and $11, but it doesn't have any plans to offer black versions of other popular accessories such as the Xbox Live Vision camera or the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player.

Upgrade Options

Microsoft will also offer the 120GB detachable hard drive as a stand-alone upgrade for existing Xbox 360 owners. The $179 drive will come with a data transfer cable to make it easy for console owners to move data from their old 20GB drive to the new 120GB drive. Expect 20GB hard drive prices to fall as people put their old drives up for sale.

Transferring hard drive information will be a little more complicated for people planning to move from the Xbox 360 Premium to an Xbox 360 Elite since a lot of Xbox Marketplace content is tied to your Xbox Live profile and the console you're using at the time of purchase. That means console owners will have trouble using a data-transfer cable to copy all the downloaded content from an existing 20GB system to a completely new Elite system. Once you switch systems, the only way to get at that content will be to log into Xbox Live with the account that you used to make the original purchase. Other accounts on the new system won't be able to access the downloaded content. Microsoft is working on a solution to the Premium-to-Elite data transfer issue and told GameSpot that it will release more information as we get closer to launch.

The Xbox 360 Elite system, black accessories, and stand-alone 120GB hard drive upgrade will all be available in retail on April 29, 2007.

this xbox 360 is awsome, but does it have what it takes to challenge the playstaion 3 in online services?,and can the xbox 360 HD-DVD challenge the Blu-Ray disc?,the xbox games are awsome, but is the online service is awsome as playstation 3,and is HD-DVD worth the price?,i think microsoft should make a new xbox that is really a challenge for sony's ps3.

Yeah they do need to update this page since its the first time I've considered finding out what the Ex-box 360's like since my freinds buying it for next christmas and I'm a Playstation 3 n00bz0rd.

    @fanboys

Truth is both fanbases are full of complete idiots. Sony's fanbase are just plain stupid and cant be communicated with at all and Xbox's fanbase are full of idiots who think they are the Einsteins of GameSpot and they won't talk to you unless you admit to spending an hour a day worshipping the console with a 33% defect rate(Not that its bad since it probably helps the economy).

Quit whining about the xbox's RROD (no not to the people who have suffered it, the people who think thats the only reason not to buy the 360) They have reduced the chip size and increased its cooling capabilities. Oh and the only reason I don't want to buy a sony is because of its retarded fanbase...

I have an Xbox elite and i have enjoyed the system very much the black paint job adds that note of difference when my friends see it and the automatic 120GB are a sweet bonis well worth the price. whale my friends who own the Xbox 360 Premium are constantly deleting stuff to make room i simply coast with no care in the world. the HDMI port and cables put me a leg up for my high rez tv's and the need to constantly go buy accessories is a pain i do not shere with my fellow man. over all whal pricey the Xbox elite is a worth while buy .

The elite is defiantly Microsoft's best console so far! The black looks way better than the stupid white. The 120GB hard drive is beyond awesome.

i got my elite back in Augist (it was manuf. in June) and I enjoyed it thoroughly until Jan. 31st when i got the RROD. Anyways, I was bored out of my mind for 7 weeks which sucked b/c before it died i had just got burnout paradise, COD4 and just bought bioshock w/out playing it. I really wouldn't expect my 360 to die, but what pissed me off more was what i found when I DID get it back -not only was it an elite that was over a year old (manuf. in march) but the back plate where the hdmi/AV/Usb/ethernet ports are was upside down. I mean, clearly i luv my xbox, but come on do u have to replace faulty 360's w/ other faulty 360'ss-we deserve better.

What is up with all of these whiners and moaners? LOOK, the elite kicks some serious ***... and so what if you got the RED RING OF DOOM~!!! You have a warranty... send it in and get a new one. May take a while, but Im sure you have SOME OTHER console that is being neglected laying around somewhere. We all buy multiple systems, at least a true gamer does... because "We" understand that there are going to be differences in consoles, but that doesnt matter. What matters are the EXCLUSIVES TITLES... that you wont be playing and I will... Unless you are a hardcore gamer who owns a WII, Elite, and PS3... not to mention every other console that has been produced to todays date. Hope to see ya online ppl, so I can pwn ur aces.

I have had an Elite since the day they launched and I love it. However I'm afraid to say I got the RING OF DEATH last week. I thought all new consoles built with revised main board would be safe from this problem but it seems they're not.

ezatfahmy why dont you just go out and buy a play n charge kit or the rechargable packs those are way better instead of wasting money on new batteries every time ANYWAYS they should have put in an HDDVD drive, what a waste if the ps3 has one and only twenty five dollars more should also made wireless internet. I think they released this too early I heard there was suppose to be a model with the built in HDDVD but I think theyre going to wait and see if they can survive the format war against bluray first

To me its still sucks because it still use lan cable to connect the internet. Why not wireless connection build in and the battery??? Every time when the battery finish we need to open it and replace a new one. Thats and old school. I prefer ps3 controller. Thats how it should be done...

fresh_fish_101, I'm guessing the problem is that the hard-drive came with pre-loaded HD movies and demos on it... the pro system comes with 10 gigs worth of it, but since the elite has more space, it probably came with 17 gigs

I'm still waiting for a cooler CPU, and built in HD-Player. It would be awsome if they made a smaller PSU as well, the current one is huge and heavy. Lastly, an HD-Player/burner would be a dream come true---hear that Microsoft!!!
