Sure, the NCAA college-football season doesn't start for a few more months, but in the world of video games, college pigskin begins in July. That's when EA Sports traditionally releases the next iteration in its NCAA Football series, and this year is no different. On July 18, the publisher will release NCAA Football 07 for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, PlayStation Portable, and Xbox 360. In preparation for the upcoming release, we'll take the next four weeks to look at the top 25 teams in NCAA 07, starting here with teams ranked 25 to 16. We've also got a look at the three impact players on each squad, as well as video of every team in the top 25. Join us back here today and every Friday for an updated look at the best teams in the nation (according to EA, that is) to see where your favorite lines up.

The Yellowjackets put the pain to Colorado in this clip.

Watch It »

The Yellowjackets came out of the gate swinging in 2005, with convincing defeats of Auburn and North Carolina to start off the season in fine form. The good results didn't last for long, however, as Tech fell at the hands of Virginia Tech and N.C. State in back-to-back weeks, and then they later lost to Virginia, archrival Georgia, and Utah to cap off a 7-5 season. If they hope to best that result, it will largely be thanks to the hands of wideout phenom Calvin Johnson, who has the ability to make defenders look silly with his long frame and speedy feet. Tossing the rock to Johnson will be senior quarterback Reggie Ball, who passed for more than 2,100 yards in 2005.

Calvin Johnson can look forward to more touchdowns and lots more yards once the 2006 college football season kicks off.

Roll Tide, Roll! Watch as the Crimson Tide take on the Ole Miss Rebels.

Watch It »

After struggling for several seasons, Tide fans were just about ready to give up on coach Mike Shula. After a 6-6 season in 2004, and worse results before that, the Crimson Tide was looking like a shell of its former dominant self. And then something funny happened in 2005. The Tide won. And won. And won. With huge victories over Florida and Steve Spurrier's revamped South Carolina program, the Tide was truly on a roll until they bumped into the twin Tigers of LSU and Auburn, who beat Alabama in back-to-back Saturdays to dampen the Tide's fires a bit at the end of the season. Still, there's no reason to think Alabama won't continue their winning ways in 2006, especially with players such as halfback Kenneth Darby and linebacker Juwan Simpson leading the team.

Kenneth Darby has danced his way to 2,489 rushing yards during his three seasons at 'Bama.

Clemson hosts Boston College in this battle of ACC heavyweights.

Tommy Bowden has been on and off the Clemson hot seat for the past few seasons, and while last year's 8-4 record isn't anything to scoff at, close losses to teams such as Georgia Tech, Miami, and Boston College hint to the season that could have been for Bowden and his Tigers. This season, standout players such as Chansi Stuckey at wide receiver, Anthony Waters at linebacker, and defensive end Gaines Adams hope to help Bowden off that hot seat once and for all.

The Iowa State Cyclones are on the road against the Texas Tech Red Raiders in this clip.

Watch It »

Another program on a slow and steady rise to prominence, Texas Tech has slowly been building winning season after winning season under the expert guidance of head coach Mike Leech. Lynchpins in the Red Raiders' 2005 season were wins over Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Nebraska. A narrow defeat at the hands of Alabama in the Cotton Bowl kept the Red Raiders down to earth, however. This season, Texas Tech hopes to improve on their football fortunes with a pair of dynamic wide receivers, Joel Filani and Jarrett Hicks, who combined for more than 1,800 yards in 2005, as well as 18 touchdowns.

It's a cross-state battle as the Virginia Cavaliers take on the Hokies from Virginia Tech.

Watch It »

The ignominious dismissal of quarterback Marcus Vick last season was a lowlight in an otherwise sterling few seasons for the Hokies. Despite his off-field troubles, Vick helped guide Virginia Tech to an 11-2 record, defeating Louisville in the Gator Bowl. With Vick gone, however, the Hokies will have to go about rebuilding an offense that has for the past few years relied on mobile quarterbacks with cannons for arms. Sean Glennon seems to be the early favorite for the start (at least, according to NCAA 07), but there is plenty of talent on the ball, including Eddie Royal at wide receiver who will look to make a big jump from his relatively sedate 2005 season, which saw him catch 27 balls for 315 yards and two touchdowns.

Left outside linebacker Xavier Adibi and his teammate Vince Hall comprise two-thirds of the best linebacking corps in the ACC.

I would have to disagree with the following statement. I feel that there are other rivalries out there that make it too difficult to determine the best in the sport. You have Miami v. FSU, Texas Tech v. Texas A&M, Maryland v. West Virginia, Georgia v. GT, Clemson v. South Carolina, and many more. Actually, one that I could put at the top would be Army v. Navy!

    "chrisnd
Jmick23 - "since the woody hayes era starting in 1951. The ohio state michigan rivalry has been in ohio states favor."

This is a spurious argument at best. Yes, technically if you go back to Hayes's first year of 1951, OSU leads the series 27-26-2. But Michigan won in 1950, so if you start at the beginning of a decade (which is usually how rivalries are judged), the series is tied. Redardless, it is only one game. Which isn't much, considering that John Cooper (or Gordon Gee, I can't remember) that a "Tie to Michigan is as good as a win."

Regardless, the OSU / Michigan rivalry is still rated the #1 college football rivalry today, and may possibly even be the greatest rivalry in all of sports."

With all of the talent in the ACC, I find it hard to believe that not one team made it into the top 10. There still is Miami, FSU, VT, Clemson, and GT rounding out the top 25.

Damn Phatfu you’re just as ignorant as the rest of the Michigan. I don’t really give a **** if you stick to your original post. Fact is it doesn’t do you any justice against my post. I love how you just assume I'm 12 and say I’m stupid because I don’t use correct capitalization or punctuation. I’m sorry I had no idea I was being graded on this. I’m 21 and I go to Purdue jackass. So therefore I don’t think I could be stupid and majoring in engineering at Purdue University. Anyway, how many 12 year olds do you know that actually follow the entire history of a college football team. You talk about how Michigan is under the radar. I could say the same thing about Ohio States defense. Only 2 returning starters but plenty of players with experience. I think there are a lot of people underestimating there defense. God I can’t wait till we spank you guys in the shoe this year. And ill be at the game to witness it. Hopefully well get a chance to talk on this board then.

Alabama being ranked at all is a bit of a joke. Their defense was the only good thing about that team last year, and they lost almost everyone on that side of the ball.

That was last year... get ready for Bama to rock the SEC! Darby is going to show out this year and we had a great recruiting class... If your going to criticise bama and make predictions base it on the team that WILL play THIS year... not last year's team.

adammf20 - "O Yeah Quick Question For OSU Fans BTW If It Sounds Like Im Trying To Insult Sorry But I Didn't Get To See OSU Michigan Game...Can Smith Throw Accurately Or Is He Just A Scrambler Like Vick? "

Smith can throw with the best of them. One of the things that makes him such a devastating opposing QB is the fact that he is a scrambler with a wickedly accurate arm. He and the OSU team racked up 617 yards against my beloved Notre Dame team in the Fiesta Bowl, and it was a mixture of throwing and running. There were numerous times when ND had OSU on the ropes with 3rd and long, and his ability to read a blitz, scramble like mad, then read an opening downfield is nearly unmatched. (Of course, it certainly helps when you have Antonio Holmes and Ted Ginn, Jr. running your routes). If Troy had played the entire year last year (instead of Coach McSweatervest blowing the first four games by swapping Smith and Zwick) he could have been the frontrunner for the Heisman, and may have even possibly beaten Texas and PSU.

Yes, Smith is a very talented quarterback, and will most likely be Brady Quinn's stiffest competition for this year's Heisman (sorry all you AP fans, but the Heisman is going to a QB this year).

Oklahoma is not being given the respect they deserve. First of all, they had an inexperienced quarterback leading them, but he has improved. Second, there's no way you can tell me Kenny Irons of Auburn is better than Adrian Peterson. Obviously the game developers have never heard of injuries affecting one's yardage, but Adrian and Oklahoma will recover and definitely do better than #8.

Hey Phatfu wanna know something funny? Michigan's offense and defense aren't even scary on paper. Isn't much better to be scarier somewhere than to be scarier nowhere. You're trying to make OSU look bad, but the even worst thing is you can't make Michigan look that great. We'll be in for a show and I hope to hell they keep this forum up.

And for you Texas fans, this is OSU's year to shine. We'll kill you at home and get the revenge we deserve. Our defense won't be like you people are saying and the so called experts are saying.

I am from louisville and I think louisville doesnt get any respect. I agree that the Big East is not a very strong conference but it can still have some good teams in it like louisville and west virginia. UL doesnt get many good teams to come to papa johns cardinal stadium due to our weak conferences and weak nonconference schedules but when we do get good teams at home we are one of the toughest places to play. just ask then ranked #4 florida state from a few years a go. therefor we have a good chance to beat both west virginia and miami at home. and even if we lose to west virginia then they will most likely go to the championship and louiville will take west virginias place in the bcs bowl for big east champion. so louisvile is looking to have the best year in school history

jmick23 - "the rivalry between these two coaches is just as big as the game itself thats what made it so famous."

Funny thing about Woody - there was a post over on the EverydayshouldbeSaturday.com website/CFB blog about Woody and his crazy antics. It was fun to see all the crazy Buckeye/Wolverine fans come out and start talking trash to each other. I mean, heck, the game is 5 months from now, and here in Ohio it is all anyone can talk about.

It really is kind of a phenomenon, really. At worst, I think that UM and OSU go into that game at the end of November with no more than 1 loss each - OSU will find a way to blow it against Texas, and Michigan is probably going to lose to ND. sorry Phatfu, but that is my call. Regardless, both teams will be ranked very high (as their loss will be at the early stages of the season) and will definitely determine the Big-10 champion. No offense to the Nittany Lions, but they will struggle in South Bend, and JoePa just won't be able to recover.

Now, as for the "toss up" comment by Phatfu - that is an ultimate truth. There is no dominant team right now, although as BradyOak said, ON PAPER, ND and OSU are the dominants, and Texas gets the #2 nod because they are the defending champs. Everything this season is up for grabs, and I would not be surprised if WVU runs the table and gets to the big game...sorry JBWiss, I am sure you don't agree...but, I calls it like I sees it.

Anyway, here's to a great 2006 college football season. May the BCS be so jumbled and discombobulated by November that the NCAA is forced to abondon it entirely and give us a playoff system instead!!!

chrisnd im not going to disagree with your statement because what you say is very true. but have you ever watched the brodcasts. its all about woody and bo. hell even in 2002 when ohio state won the national championship i remember jackson saying "rest easy woody" while showing a statue of woody hayes. the rivalry between these two coaches is just as big as the game itself thats what made it so famous. if you disagree with me and say you are right then the woody vs bo is a very very close second

  • Phatfu

    Posted Jul 17, 2006 5:51 pm PT

Since the Woody area the record is 27-26-2 in favor of OSU! Give me a break! 1 win more than UM. So you are going back to 1951. You can start in many different years to gain advantage for each school. So again, since 1897 UM is on top. 57-39-6 is the record. History doesn't matter. UM will be better than you expect!

UM vs ND will be a great game. Henne is now a Junior this year I truly believe he will have a great year. Brady is good. We all know it is the system. ND will be surprised when they aren't as sucessful as they were last year. Coaches now have tape to study for NDs offense under Weis. It won't be easy to stop but it won't be a surprise.

Yes ND and OSU offenses are THE SCARIEST ON PAPER! I said it. What they did last year was last year. It is on paper until they do it again!

I'm waiting for the day people start realizing this season is one of the biggest toss ups I have ever seen in college football.

jmick23 - "the reason i use the start of the woody hayes era as a starting point was because thats when it became a rivarly. the reason it picked up as much hype as it did was because of woody hayes' strong hatred for the michigan team."

Actually, I am going to disagree with you here, but only slightly. What makes this rivalry such a great one is not necessarily related to Woody vs. Bo. I would attest that this rivalry became what it is way back in 1918, when the Big Ten conference (which was then called the "Western Conference") was created. Since then, Michigan is ahead slightly, but not by much.

Regardless, nearly everyone can agree that OSU/UM is one of the greatest in college football.

JBWiss, I too would like to see this forum continue. There are some great games this year, and unlike in past seasons, the great games are spread out throughout the season, not mashed into the end of the season as the old classics used to be. ND's September schedule, Miami vs. FSU and Louisville in September, OSU vs. Texas on the 9th, and a multitude of other early season gems. Then we get to end on such classics as ND vs. USC, OSU vs. Michigan, Florida vs. FSU, and Alabama vs. Auburn. And of course, crammed in the middle of October will be ND vs. Navy, USC vs. UCLA, Texas vs. Oklahoma, Louisville vs. WVU (Nov 2), and Florida vs. Georgia.

Yes, it is going to be a great season indeed!!!

Oh, and Easley92, don't get too caught up in the hype behind Troy Smith. He is a great player, to be sure, but there is a well known QB playing at Notre Dame this year that is also considered a Heisman frontrunner. And remember this - Notre Dame has produced more Heisman-winning quarterbacks than any other school since the award started in 1934. So watch out Troy.

Since the Big 12 has teams that are shotty in that they just don't play at a high level consistently with the exception of UT & OU, I'm predicting one of them will be in the BCS Championship game. I'm going with the Horns because they have 7 offensive/7 defensive coming back, they have OSU at home, & Rhett Bomar has at least one more year of dumb mistakes in him. AP will bail him out of all of the games but the Red River Shootout. As for OSU, 2 returning starters on defense. I don't care how good you are a reloading, thats going to show early in the season.

I wonder if they will keep this forum going throughout the season, it will be entertaining to hear feedback from all the fans in here as the season progresses. I would also like to say, both Miami and WVU are playing in Louisville this year. That is a HUGE advantage for Louisville. Louisville is one of the largest college/high school sports cities in the nation. In fact, we have one of the largest (if not the largest) High School football games in the nation (Trinity vs. St Xavier). Since Louisville football has mostly been under the national radar due to their previously small conference, people don't realize the passionate fans that follow Louisville wherever they go. I understand that the sports journalists are picking WVU over Louisville, but I would rather be the underdog at home then the favorite away. Once the season starts, I believe that more people will hear of more names on the Louisville squad (for example, "Super" Mario Urrutia who is nearly 7 foot at wide out and makes some huge plays). Anyways, can't wait for the season to begin. There is going to be some GREAT college football action across the country going on this season and cant wait to throw back a brewski while watching teams beat the crap out of each other. GO CARDS!!!

the reason i use the start of the woody hayes era as a starting point was because thats when it became a rivarly. the reason it picked up as much hype as it did was because of woody hayes' strong hatred for the michigan team. also from that point forward it was no longer a lopsided rivalry. i think any sportswriter would agree with me that it would be a valid reference point. there are thousands of articals that refer to woody hayes. The woody hayes vs. bo schembechler (who was woody hayes' assestent coach prior to goin to michigan for anyone who may not know.) is what made this rivalry what it is today.
