Sony Conference

Sony's Richard Marks tells GameSpot about the PlayStation 3 design.

Watch It »

The PlayStation 3 system will be available with two different hard-drive options in Japan and the United States in November 2006, and in Europe and Australasia in March 2007. The later date for the European and Australasian launches (as well as those planned for Russia, the Middle East, and Africa) has been blamed on delays in blue-laser diode production. The console will hit Japan first on November 11. The 20GB model will sell for 49,980 yen (about $429), roughly $85 lower than the 59,800 yen price Sony originally announced for the console at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2006. Sony will let Japanese retailers name their own price for the 60GB version. The PlayStation 3 will launch in the United States on November 17. In the US, the 20GB version will retail for $499, and the 60GB version will retail for $599. In Europe, the 20GB version will retail for 499 euros, and the 60GB version will retail for 599 euros. In Australia, the 20GB version will retail for AU$829.95, and the 60GB version will retail for AU$999.95.

The new PlayStation 3 console has an elegant design featuring clean lines and pleasing curves. In contrast to the Xbox 360's puckered "inhale" shape, the PS3 sides expand outward, barely containing the hardware inside. Designers had to build the case around the advanced cooling system built to handle heat output from the Cell processor, the Nvidia GPU, and the system power supply. PC or even Xbox 360 owners would expect a system with as much power as the PS3 to sound like a small aircraft on power up, but the system is actually remarkably quiet. "When it starts to notice a heat issue, it can ramp up the fan RPMs, but in general, it's as quiet as the PlayStation 2 was," according to Sony's Richard Marks.

Early prototypes showed consoles in white, black, and silver--but initial models will only be black. Sony used material choice to add extra sophistication to the console design. The console exterior appeared to be a glossy, opaque black in official preview images, but the system casing is actually a very dark, semi-transparent black similar in style to the PSP's exterior. The curved top of the console suggests that the PS3 will need to sit at the very top of your equipment stack if placed horizontally. The console will weigh in at a solid 11 pounds. In comparison, the Xbox weighs 8.5 pounds and the Xbox 360 weighs 7.7 pounds. The PS3 measures 12.8"(W) x 3.8"(H) x 10.8"(L), which is in line with the other consoles.

Like the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii, the PlayStation 3 will be able to stand vertically or sit horizontally on an AV rack. PS3 owners will be able to reposition the console while the system is running without worrying about accidentally damaging a game or movie disc. "We've been doing that for six years now, I think, so we're confident that we'll have no issue with that," said Marks.

The 60GB console features a front-slot-loading Blu-ray optical-disc drive and four USB ports, as well as memory stick, compact flash, and SD card reader support to provide for an absurd level of media connectivity. The 20GB PlayStation 3, in comparison, won't have memory stick, compact flash, or SD card ports. The 60GB version will also come with Wi-Fi built-in, but the 20GB version will only have the Ethernet port.

The Blu-ray optical-disc drive can play games and movie discs. Each Blu-ray disc can hold up to 54GB worth of data, which should virtually guarantee that games won't be left wanting for extra media space. Games will be region-free, but movies will still have region locks preventing multiregion playback. The Blu-ray spec has North America, South America, and Asia (except for China) in region A. If the spec doesn't change, that means your US PlayStation 3 should be able to play those Blu-ray Godzilla movies imported from Japan. The first 500,000 PS3 units will ship with a full-length Blu-ray movie, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. The PS3's Blu-ray drive will also support many of the older disc formats, including CD-ROM, CDR+W, DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, and DVD+R.

The 2.5" portable hard drives supply the system with much-needed storage space for PlayStation Network downloads, applications, and media files. Games will use the hard drive for game saves, and it will cache game files for decreased load times. During the Gran Turismo HD E3 2006 demonstration, Sony's Kaz Hirai boasted that load times would be reduced to two to three seconds. The game took around six to seven seconds to load during the E3 demo, but loading times will likely drop once developers have more time for game optimization. The 60GB PS3 will be more useful than the 20GB version if you wish to take advantage of the system's media functionality, but Sony has stated that upgrading the hard disk will be as simple as dropping a larger capacity 2.5" SATA notebook hard drive into the system.

Do you think the PlayStation 3 has the right mix of hardware, games, media capabilities, and online support? Are you planning on buying a system at launch on November 17?

Props to tat2dchad comment "the games are gonna get alot beeter over the next few years.......360 does not have the disk space to do massive games....or else they are gonna need to put games on more than one disk...not a slam on 360 at all!!! but just look atthe PS@ and they games at launch....and then look how games progressed after that! "

No sh*t the Ps3's gonna have a few bugs too deal with but there gonna be great in the future. PS3 has taken the 360s launch to make their own better by avoiding such bugs. Why do you think the 360 wanted to get a head start? Give a couple months after PS3's launch and they'll be booming.

I already own a Xbox 360, and hoping to by a PS3 in the future (not bias to any platform.)
I thought GTA San Andreas was a huge game and couldn't believe Developers crammed it all into one disc, but imagine....Next San Andreas on BluRay. Word is 360's gonna be throwing out their own GTA. But you can go only soo far when putting it on DVD. Basically they can only change gameplay, or graphics (balancing out gameplay) when making another GTA on DVD. Where as PS3 equiped with BluRay can make GTA to full globe...I think. Too bad 360 still using DVD's most likely because they had an early launch. I'm not thrilled in buying the HD DVD player becuase I rather get my PS3 and watch BluRay then HD DVD.

But i think the Xbox 360 is still great too, with their future line up. I'm a big fan of their LIVE and do think it'll go farther than PS3O. Not to mention you probally will need a Credit Card to download content. Something that questions me is the 20gb, 60gb, which one should I get?
Do I really need 60gb? I mean, if you own a Xbox 360 you know 20gb is a good amount of storage.
I want to know a sample of what i'll be using 60gb for? I know you'll be allowed to download tons of content but im not gonna be paying extra bucks on downloading tunes or clips i could be getting for free on the Internet.

I highly recommend as I am doing, is to wait a couple months for for the reviews to flood in, and read about the online cababilities, bugs, comparisons, graphics, and wheather you do need 60gbs or not. Also read a couple forums of what people think of the PS3 compared to the 360 when it actually does come out instead of taking about what they think they'll be getting. If you can't wait and have to have it, consider on buying some warranty on the system you just bought because of bugs, and i promise you, your gonna be really pissed off when you think to yourself you should of listened to the sales person and spend just those extra dollars too assure yourself you can't be doubted. You'll probally spending about $800.00 plus on the 60gb PS3 and games, extra controllers for you buddies, and warranty.

Im just waiting till holiday season when ive had gathered enough information to make sure ive shopped smartly and aware of future upcomings.

I've been a big fan of the PS line; & it's been great fun anticipating the next platform launch & all the new games to go along with it.
I'm a loyal PS player/customer/supporter, & I was really looking forward to the PS3 finally being launched here in North America.

At this point in time, however, I'm actually going to wait---not jump on a brand new 60 Gig PS3.
Yes, ALL the new game previews have had killer graphics, sound, etc.; but the one thing not being talked about more is the issue of console 'stability'.

The inside buzz is that the PS3's really Not ready for this Launch, afterall. There are some major hardware issues that Sony's not been talking much about.

As much as I've been faithfully waiting for PS3 to finally come my way... well, I'm just not ready to put that much cash down on a product who's hardware instability issues haven't been addressed in the ways that we consumers should be able to expect---especially from a giant like Sony.

Never thought I'd say this, but... I'm going to wait a few months---or more--- until I'm sure that my new PS3 can really live up to it's Name.
Besides, there's a bunch of new Games & Gaming gear out now, & throughout this Holiday Season.
So, I'll be spending my cash on a bunch of other Gaming goodies--- guaranteed to make the Holidays much brighter for myself, & All my Gaming Buddys.

I can't afford it, therefore, I am poor? Well, I guess so cause I ain't payin' no $600 for a console. Although the cheapest price for a blu-ray DVD player right now is atleast $750. Maybe it's not such a bad deal after all...but then, I'm poor. I'll just wait for the XBOX360 to go down in price.

The controller will weigh no more than the wired Dual Shock controller, even with the added six-axis functionality, but that might be due to the loss of force feedback support. LOL

All I can say is PS3 will have no force feedback LOL that alone will make the system suck hard!!!

after readin RUGRIPPER's last post............ I to have been around longer than video games....and after reading that post made me realize....almost all of the random idiots that post MY SYSTEM ROCK YOURS SUCKS.....are all people who think first gen games are Ps2, dreamcast...or super NES even............let me take yall back to the land of "PONG" two moving white rectangles the bounce a white square back and forth. Lets even talk about the first "next gen" games...with an unheard of 2 buttons and a D pad!!! INSANE!!!!
    something to think about

so thanks to all of you who help me out with my free theropy sessions!!!!

    Posted Nov 4, 2006 1:45 pm PT

wow im impressed!!!!! this board is actually people talking about the ps3 vs. the 360 instead of how great the 360 is!!
i guess this is the biggest difference between Playstation fans and 360 clones!!! Most of the playstation fans have a 360...mostly because it came out first and we wanted next gen.......and now we wait for our "Holy Grail"
but while we wait we all understand that we will prolly have some disappointments...some problems...and some headaches to put up with.....we all understand we might be stuck waiting for ours to get fixed or for the next shipment to come out so we can replace the one we had!!!
But we can admit it might not be perfect right away....where the 360 homers...dont even address the fact the 360 has issues..heat ,destroys disk's if moved while on!!( Still the dumbest oversight ever!) They would just like to point out all the problems that the ps3 has!!! the problem is all the problems the ps3 will have are all speculation...or maybe just 360 voodoo and wishful thinking. I have to say it sounds alot more like some 360 fans are mad because they are 360 fans by default...they already spent the money on a 360 and now they cant afford the PS3 and bot did it piss some people off......maybe some of you should have waited and bought the system ya really wanted!!! its easy to hate the most popular kid in school when you are the one with no games...err......friends

so again im not bashing the 360 at all...my problem is more with the ignorant 360 homers that cant discuss their point...they just have a point that PS3 sucks....but have nothing to back it up!!

I am beginning to go insane over the ps3 gameplay's ive been looking at. I love how people say "Oh wii is gona have the best gameplay". If waving around a lil **** and looking at 2 yr old graphics makes good gameplay then i dont know what to tell you". But after watching heavnly sword, a game that i had to intention of playing....completely stunned me. This goes to show how far sony is going to make each and every game is to the fullest. Check out heavenly sword gameplay 7 and motorstorm gameplay 7. This will give you an idea and finally will let you understand how much better this will be that 360. I laughed so hard when i saw dead or alive 6 on 360. Just look at virtual fighter and then tell me how 360 matches ps3...No competition. cheers lol

Rugripper... I think we're coming a little closer to understanding one another. Still once more I have to say that...WE DON'T HAVE PS3'S YET!!!!! For anyone to judge a product without firsthand longterm experience is an undeniable sign of prejudice - or FANBOYDOM. My PS3 is on reserve... can't wait to get it... hope it doesn't have problems but history tells us that launch consoles need refinements. I was FUMING when my 360 broke... although it didn't have anything to do with the overheating rings of death, I was still mad... mainly at the tech support and the length of time it took to get it back. I was upset it broke but foresight and an unclouded understanding had me get the 2 year warranty for 60 bucks. Let me repeat this again... If the PS3 has the same kind of warranty available I will be the first to purchase it because I know that these are products not gods. Its funny how politics and religious tunnel vision creep into such an unlikely place as videogames. The PS3 won't save your soul... and if the 360 ran the country it would make the mistake of overheating with its turning gears of war- but people will go on defending and trying to cover up all their mistakes like catholic priests touching little girls.

I found an article saying that the PS3 is superior to the xbox360. The article was posted on October 28, 2006. Here's the link for the article:

    http://www.articlesbase.com/entertainment-articles/the-sony-ps3-vs-xbox-360-67957.html

But IGN doesn't agree that the PS3 is superior to the xbox360. IGN was saying that the PS3's graphics weren't as good as the xbox360's graphics. So who's right about the the PS3?

in 12 days we will find out if there will be a change in the way we look at video games.... in my opinion...it might not be a huge change on launch day.....but over the next few years........well lets just say on the 17th when i walk out of my gamestop with my new toy...i just hope i dont pee a little until i get home!

yea bein the 1% would suck BAD haha, n i think some of the one percent were modded 360s from wat i read here at gamespot. from wat i heard from my friend he siad he read that a ps3 must act as a dedicated server for a game inorder to play it online n if they shutdown the console then its game over. and comapnies can choose whether or not to charge players for playing their games online instead of a steady 50 bucks a year thign like microsoft. but i think either the article he read or wat he just siad was mixed up with somethin else or a lie all together. but my main concern is, will the service lag alot, will it be user friendly, and are those above thigns mentioned true (doubt most of it). but im gonna wait till it comes out see how thigns are goin give it a couple months for them to work out ne bugs in it n then make my decision

just another point of conversation....alot of 360 loyalists want to bash and bash about the ps3...how online is gonna suck for it etc.....im just saying a year into live and there are still problems that pop up...will prolly happen with sony as well..............but with a year head start...maybe their system isnt so perfect?

if u buy the $400 360 it comes with a hard drive, i dont see y ud buy the 300 n then the harddrive because youll spend mroe money than the $400 one. n the wii i feel (no im not a fanboy) is the only one that is really giving us a nex-gen product with the controller and the games that seem to be taking good use of it, n i think the wii if they can pump out some maturer games that take advantage of the controller or just real sweet games then it will be the best system. and the 360 i think with XNA, (and gears of war, halo 3) is gonna be sweet gettin to make ur own games, however that cost $100 to put them on ur 360, so theres a downsidebut hey 400(the system)+50(live)+100(xna membership)=550 n u still pay less than the ps3. ne ways got a bit off topic teh ps3 does look sweet but the only thing i dont like is the price and i havnt seen ne games that would make me wanna buy it. but im not sayin they wont have sweet games just sayin that the ones ive seen havnt got me hooked

    MitchCheers....

GREAT POST!!! and i agree with alot of wjat you said in theory......but i have 2 disagreements or opinions to argue........1st i dont think sony has bragged itself up to much....actually they have been pretty hush hush about alot of things...and even the things we have heard from them....are teasers i do believe!! they are telling us a little of what to expect in the future...but i really dont think they have said alot of what it can do...because they are not even sure of what they want it to do...they will learn in time.
2nd one.....xbox has created a place that encourages friendships? i say gimmie a break!!!! to back up my point....go play halo 2 online...half the people in there are under 15 with mouths on them tha they should be afraid to kiss their moms with ....and the other half all think they are the hottest gamer in the world!! and nintendo is always putting out fun games...the problem is.....unless you have kids...you dont want anyone to know your playing them!! lol it was a joke...im sure Wii will be good...in my opinion nintendo just needs to grow up a little bit(mature up the games)
last point....hmmm thas 3 not 2....oh well anyways.....360 is gonna be the same price as the ps3 if ya plan on picking up the hd drive$200,,,,,on top of your xbox live membership.....its all the same!! PEOPLE NEED TO LEAVE THE MONEY ISSUE ALONE!!! general rule of thumb...ya get what ya pay for.....yet to be seen with the ps3......but i cant wait to find out!!!

a note to all the xbox 360 fans that wanna scream xbox live is so much better.......hmmmm so the new update has made alot of 360's not able to play games or boot up at all!!!!

now granted microsoft has said they will replace/fix any 360 with problems.....but ....for $50 a year ya would hope they wouldnt break your 360!!

you know what?..................people that wanna rip apart PS3 and the games that are comming out etc. etc....... all i can say is yup maybe at launch none of the games will be up to full potential!!! here we go again back to money.....yup the prollt did hurry up and put some games out just to have games...but the thing we are forgetting is......the games are gonna get alot beeter over the next few years.......360 does not have the disk space to do massive games....or else they are gonna need to put games on more than one disk...not a slam on 360 at all!!! but just look atthe PS@ and they games at launch....and then look how games progressed after that!!!!! George Lucas said the ps2 had more power than all of the stuff he used to make the STAR WARS movies....so now that sony has bummed it up....can you imagine what games are gonna be capable of?! yup there are gonna be problems with ps3 as there are with any new console......but just wait and see what happens!!!

The PS3 look and sounds impressive, but I can feel that most of these rumours and such are just specualtion, trying to under mine the public consumers into buying their product. PS3 seems to me, to be hiding itself in respects to what it is actually capable of. The X360 and Wii have been honest about hardware and other things concerning their console, but PS3 seems to be under false pretencies. Trying to be King of next generation gaming, they have jammed everything into a box, boosted graphical power and have thrown it together at a staggering price that few can afford, and they assume they have a winning console that everyone will buy. They have underminded Microsoft and Nintendo, which are truly looking at the demographic population and trying to please them either in games or online services. Playstation seems the only console looking for ideas, as in Xbox's online capabilties, nintendo unique motion sensoring, they are ripping them off and passing them off as their own.
And as for graphical power, the X360 has beatiful visuals, PS3 is claiming more graphical power. But honestly, who cares if their is one more pixalted brick on the wall, or an extra line of hair on a characters eyebrow. Playstation are falling hard, and they are too stubborn to realize it, the PS3 could be a great console, but the developers and manufactuars have failed in the department of knowing what is creative and what gaming is really about . . . Games!
The X360 has great titles, excellent games that look beautiful. Why should people fork out hundreds of more dollars for a agme that is near identical for an extra pixalted brick or cloud, or wrinkle in a face. And I would be damned if I was stuck with an over bloated priced console with great, stunning graphics, but left with lifeless games I dont like or care for playing.
Indeed, PS3 could become a great console to own, have great games. But it comes down to what games you want to play. That is what consoles are about . . . . games. Not Blue Ray disc format, or dvd playback but Games. PS3, even though has some nice titles, have forgotten what the gaming is about. Fun and family. You can not have fun and family when you are finacially broke. Nintendo has not forgotten, they are gameboy kids at heart and will never change, 360 is cheaper and is looking at creating friendships through online gaming and releasing excellent titles to have. The battle has just begun, but I'm sticking with 360 and Wii, they have games i'm interested in, games that look fun and enjoyable. You dont need graphical power to win people, 360 has proved that in graphical power it is an awesome bit of machinery that is only flexing its muscles, and will ignore Playstation arrogant protests. Sure, PS3 will sell lots, but what your left with is something you want to love and give a home to for the rest of your life, something you wont regret buying, something you'll play until the ours of the morning with your brother or dad. Playstation is scared and is boasting to much. But only time will tell, I could be serveley wrong, but at the end of the day, I'm happy with the choice I made, I dont need that extra pixel, I have my games and they have me to enjoy and play them . . . . And I guess that is all that matters.

WHOA MATE!!!! You read my post way wrong. I called that EB dude a RETARD The point is I am buying a PS3 I told that dude he's a crazed fanboy and he's the manager no less. I am the voice of free thinking mate thats why I hate the patrioting of any game system. As for the 360 being sketchy... don't even assume... cause then you make an ass out of u and me. My litterbox 360 (thats what I called it for the month that it was gone) broke too bro. I spent a documented 10 plus on the phone talking to the wacky tech support and as previously stated I waited well over a month to get my system turned around. Microsoft has since refunded all the blokes who spent the 150 getting it repaired but I was wise enough to buy the warranty anyway (you might want to check your resources there cause you can read just about anywhere that they have swallowed their pride on that one) . I'm not advocating microsofts support cause I was royaly ticked off and they totally dropped the ball there but if you think the PS3 is going to be without problems then all I can chalk it up to is fannie delusion. I have my PS3 preordered and my Resistance fall of man. I'm stoked, I'm broke, but I know my ps2 broke (cause I was watching dvd's?) so if there are warranties to buy... PS3 or 360... kids you should pony up and pay now versus later cause first generation systems have wrinkles that need ironed out plain and simple. Game On

Yes I would.I think we should have it come out sooner though.I just don't know any one who would not want the PS3.I don't think the PS3 will sell that well because of the prices.Mabe if the prices were a little bit lower like $400 and $500 that would get more people to buy the PS3.Hey I bet a person would wait 6 hours to get a $500 to$600 dollar system. When the Xbox360 came out people would wait 12 hours to get that system. So that means people won't have to worry about waiting in line because a lot of people don't like the prices. So that leads me to my to conclusion .Yes I agree with the system but not the prices.
