After rather exhaustive testing, it's pretty clear that the two 3Dfx Voodoo-based products, Diamond's Monster 3D and Orchid's Righteous 3D, are the cream of the crop for pure game acceleration. And although the other chip and board vendors might object to this statement, Voodoo, along with Rendition, is currently enjoying the most enthusiastic game developer support, meaning that no matter what the future holds for Direct3D, you'll still have plenty of titles to play with any of these products.

As for the series of Rendition-based boards (clearly the choice among fully functional graphics boards), all three products are close. In the end, we gave the nod to the Sierra Screamin' 3D, because it has a fast RAMDAC, as does the 3D Blaster from Creative Labs, but has a more up-to-date game bundle. As an alternate, the Matrox Mystique is a very fine overall product: cheap, and fast at everything.

And if you want an add-in only board, but don't want to spend too much money, the Apocalypse 3D is a good choice, as long as you have a fast computer - a Pentium 166 or better.
