"Quake III Arena provides the ultimate deathmatch experience." Jeff Gerstmann, GameSpot Review

The theme of 1999 was multiplayer gaming. EverQuest practically paralyzed the gaming industry, and Asheron's Call simply added to the massively multiplayer phenomenon. And Quake III and Unreal Tournament took us by storm to show us that this multiplayer-only idea for an action game could really work. At our offices, we played a lot of EverQuest, and we liked Unreal Tournament a great deal, but the one game that has enthralled us since its demo was released many months ago, and that continues to seduce us with its visceral multiplayer action, is Quake III Arena.

From the outset, Carmack and company were vocal in stating that Quake III would be a deathmatch-only game. They set out to create the best deathmatch game possible, and they succeeded. The game captures that same feeling we got when we played Quake for the first time. Despite the fact that Unreal Tournament is a better all-around game with more modes and maps, Quake III is faster, better-looking, and - in its deathmatch form - just more fun. We have five excellent nominees for multiplayer game of the year, but that intense, almost magical Quake III experience outshines the rest of the contenders.

Nominees:
Age of Empires II: Age of Kings
Asheron's Call
EverQuest
Unreal Tournament
