"The textures, especially the animated ones, are really amazing, and the game engine allows for curved surfaces, which deliver a more plausible feel to the architecture." - Jeff Gerstmann, GameSpot Review
There was little debate over which game should get this award. Thanks to a number of technical advancements that John Carmack and the rest of the id programmers were able to implement, Quake III's graphics are easily 1999's best. Effects like localized ground fog, curved surfaces, and large, animated 32-bit textures give a realistic look and feel to the game's otherwise generic levels. The characters, brought to life by a number of fluid animations and crisp textures, are varied in the number of models and skins available as well. And consider this: As good as Quake III looks, its engine wasn't used to its full graphics potential. Since Quake III is fast paced and deathmatch-only, it was designed to maintain a certain level of performance - an average that would make the experience enjoyable for as many of its players as possible. Thus it was afforded less graphics leeway than a traditional single-player game. Still, it's difficult to imagine how Quake III could have looked any better.
