Review
"It's fortunate that Torment's dialogue reads well, because there's a lot of it to read; although the game's graphics are evocative and often beautiful, the game's most vivid events are actually written out rather than portrayed onscreen." - Greg Kasavin, GameSpot Review
Although the finest computer games generally take advantage of both graphics and sound to create a convincing premise, Interplay's role-playing game Planescape: Torment takes a more traditional route and presents a story that, more often than not, you simply have to sit and read. That's not necessarily appealing, nor does the prospect of uncovering yet another amnesia-stricken protagonist's forgotten past seem interesting. It's fortunate that Torment looks and sounds good, because it's these more obvious aesthetic achievements that will lead you to realize that Torment's story is, in fact, the best part about it. It's a long and involving story that eventually reveals the hero's centuries-old history and the way in which his past lives have determined his present condition. Like many role-playing games, Torment lets you choose how to respond to the various characters you meet. But Torment is one of the few games that offers such a comprehensive list of possibilities that you soon come to feel that the hero's predicament is also your own.
