John Romero may be known best for two
things: his stint at id Software and his hair. Although
many computer game developers look like rock musicians,
Romero's influence exerts itself mostly from his design
work on games such as Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Doom II, and
Quake. Through his design work, Romero has helped
transform the 3-D action game into a genre all its own.
The multitude of clones that followed the immeasurable
success of Doom nearly mirrored his work on that product,
evidence of which can still be found in many of today's
3-D games. One of
the reasons why - and it may very well be the main reason
- that Romero's designs strike a chord in such a large
contingent of gamers is his approach. Romero was once
quoted as saying, "The reason I made games like
those was because I wanted to play them, but they didn't
exist."
Well-constructed and deeply designed games are
Romero's passion. So strong is his passion, in fact, that
he left id - the company he helped found; the company
that made him a millionaire - because id would not
utilize his design ideas in their games anymore. He
banded together with some id alumni and others to form
ION Storm, where, much to the anticipation of 3-D game
fans around the world, he will have the freedom to
explore game design to its fullest. ION Storm's new
slogan: "Design is law."
