As a cofounder of Westwood Studios -
which he created in 1985 in a garage with his friend
Louis Castle - Sperry is one-half of one of the most
successful development houses in all computer gaming. The
two founders started out designing games for SSI,
Activision, Epyx, and Infocom, but later became famous
when Westwood Studios created the SSI role-playing games,
Eye of the Beholder I and II. They were subsequently
bought by Virgin Interactive, at which time Brett became
Westwood's president and visionary point man. Brett catapulted Westwood to the
forefront of all gamers' minds, when he and his staff at
Westwood created the grandfather of the entire real-time
strategy genre, Dune II. Without this game, WarCraft or
Dark Reign might not have been realized, as well as any
number of real-time games currently under development.
Brett later helped create Command & Conquer, which
further defined and refined the real-time strategy game.
As the president of Westwood Studios, he has
shepherded Westwood through many successes in recent
years. These achievements include the record-setting
sales of C&C: Red Alert and the launch of Westwood
Chat, a free online gaming and matching service for
Westwood games that was actually up and live before
Battle.net.
Today, Brett oversees all of Virgin Interactive's
creative output as president of worldwide development, in
addition to his duties as president and CEO of Westwood.
