Faxanadu is a great game for the NES. Visually it stands out from the system's more colorful collection of games, and instead uses earthy tones with spots of muted reds and blues to create an amazing dark and gothic atmosphere; the game really captures the theme of fantasy from a more older era. Also, the enemies are nightmarish and satisfying to cut down while you climb to the top of the world tree. The music is also fitting and ranges from upbeat adventure tunes to a more sinister dungeon crawl. Many people say it's a poorer version of Zelda II, and while it does share many similarities it is really a completely different game in and of itself. Rather than bashing it against other titles, I'd say if you enjoyed Zelda you'll enjoy Faxanadu; it is a must play even today, and if you have already played it, I recommend playing it again.
