User Rating: 6.3 | Faxanadu NES
Faxanadu is one of those games that people will gladly reminisce about when they hear its name. Try playing it now, and see if you still feel the same way about it. The fact is, games that are truly "classic" are the ones whose gameplay still holds up well even in the 128-bit generation. I don't think Faxanadu is a classic, and this is mainly due to the controls. Call me crazy, but I don't really like the physics of the jump. And when you drop, you drop like a rock. This makes platform jumping tricky, and some boss battles are made quite difficult because of this. The way the hero attacks doesn't help, either...the stabbing motion might be good for the trident weapon, but not for every single weapon in the game! The password system falls into the "River City Ransom" category, in that it's too long, but I guess not all games can be Bubble Bobble, with its 5-letter passwords. I guess I can't fault Faxanadu for its password system too much, since internal batteries were still pretty new (and perhaps expensive for licensees). Faxanadu is still a good game, but it's hardly a "classic." Try playing it again, and tell me that it is.
