Originally released in 1992, and ported to the Mega Drive for a Summer 1994 release, the first sequel in SNK's long-running fighting series makes some improvement while still feeling like the original game in many ways. After the "death" of villain Geese Howard, a new baddie in the shape of Wolfgang Krauser (who would become a regular) has initiated a new King of Fighters tournament to get his hands on the one responsible for Geese Howard's death with lively, atmospheric fighting arenas all over the world instead of just South Town. But this time around we have eight characters to choose form instead of just three: Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard, Joe Higashi (the original trinity) plus Big Bear - formerly known as Raiden (from the first Fatal Fury), Jubei Yamada, Cheng Sinzan, Kim Kaphwan, and Mai Shiranui (my second favorite character, for obvious reasons) with plenty of new fighting moves among them.

The game is slightly less difficult than it's remake. I can defeat all of the opponents individually, but as part of the tournament I can get halfway at best as the difficultly quickly ramps up, which was also a problem in Fatal Fury Special. The four bosses are Billy Kane, Axel Hawk, Laurence Blood, and finally Wolfgang Krauser himself in a German castle, and you'd better get practicing those special moves if you want to beat them.

Obviously, the MD version is nowhere near as impressive as the Arcade/Neo Geo counterpart though an impressive attempt is made and it holds its own as a decent port. Strangely, it had a wide release in the US, where it can be found for rather cheap on the pre-owned market, with Japanese copies (where it also had a wide release) being rather hard to come by. An Australian version was also put out but apparently never in EU territories, though a tiny amount of copies are known to exist. I reckon that these are review copies that were sent out to magazines at the time before the release was cancelled, for unknown reasons.

This as far as Fatal Fury got on the MD, and most fans will likely already have it. A soundtrack album was released at the time.
