Finally a survival horror that is both challenging and creepy.

Fatal Frame is an amazing game. It reminds me a little of Resident Evil and Silent Hill put into one. The game controls much like those games. The only thing that is different is how you fight your enemies. You must fight off the ghosts with a camera. I know that sounds ridiculous, but it works for this game. When you switch to your camera, the game goes into first person view. You fight off the ghosts by taking a picture of them. There is a circle in the middle of your camera’s view, and you want to keep the ghost in the middle of this circle. As you keep the ghost in this circle, you will notice little symbols starting to light up around this circle. This lets you know that the camera is charging its “special” power. If you let the camera charge up, you will do more damage to the ghost. Also if you are brave enough, you can let the ghost get close to you while in first person mode. Right before the ghost attacks you the circle will turn red. If you take the picture at that time you will do something called a Zero Shot. These are really powerful shots that will take a lot of damage off a ghost.

The story in Fatal Frame revolves around a mansion in Japan called the Himuro Mansion. (Now don’t let the names intimidate you. At first they are a little hard to grasp and remember, but once you get into the game, you will not need to remember them all.) There are myths about this mansion being haunted. People stay away from this mansion in fear of never returning home. A man named Junsei is a famous author in Japan, but his last few pieces of work haven’t sold as well as they once did. He decides writing about this mansion will put him back on top where he belongs. He brings with him is editor Koji, and his assistant Tomoe to help him get his research on the Himuro Mansion. They are never heard from again...

Mafuyu (The main character’s brother and only family member left.) decides to find Junsei. Mafuyu is journalist, and Junsei is a friend and mentor of his. He takes with him two things that his mother passed on to him and his sister, an antique camera and his sixth sense.

You get to play as Mafuyu at the start of the game, but not for long. A cut seen happens and ends quickly before you can find out what exactly happened to him. Then the rest of the game you play as his sister Miku who arrives at the mansion nine days after Mafuyu disappears. She asks herself if Mafuyu really came here. Her question gets answered quickly when she finds her mother’s camera on the ground. What could have happened to him? It’s up to you to find out.

I recommend this game to anybody who likes the survival horror genera. It has an interesting story that has twists and turns along the way. You learn more about the mansion and the rituals that were practiced there. You also learn the connection that Miku and Mafuyu have to the mansion. It’s like a good book that you can’t put down because you want to know what happens next. If you like survival horror games, do yourself a favor and get this game. You won’t be disappointed.
