When it comes to capture the flag, people in the game community have become accustomed to the all-out bloody gun battles presented to them in games like Halo or Call of Duty. Fat Princess, however, takes this formula and spins it into a hilarious, cartoony 32-player brawl.

The game is set in a medieval land where the princesses of two warring kingdoms have become utterly addicted to a seemingly magical cake that grows out of the ground. Players are put in the role of a villager on one of two teams and are tasked with rescuing their princess while guarding the princess of the opposing team. Feeding the captive princess cake will fatten them up to enormous proportions making them harder for the rescuing team to carry her away back to their castle.

Feeding the princess is the game's staple, but it can have one or more of your teammates occupied the entire round.

Teamwork is a very big part of the game and teams need to use all the classes available to pull out a win. Warriors, rangers and mages are the main attack classes while the workers and priests are the support. You will soon find that if you try to rescue the princess on your own the horde of characters guarding her will make short work of you. That is why players must organize and send an attack wave made up of various classes to get around the other team's defenses. Getting your teammates to work together can be the hardest part of the game so a headset would be a wise investment before you play a match.

The gameplay is solid and mangling other characters looks and feels great. Every enemy you kill leaves a splat of blood on the game map and it's very satisfying. Getting both princesses to your castle is no easy feat (provided you're playing against a half-decent team) so winning a game makes you feel accomplished. Matches can drag on for a long while so it takes some discipline and persistence to get through one.

One of the drawbacks is that there are times when you'll be caught in a stalemate and it'll feel like an eternity for the game clock to finally wear down and decide a victor. In times like these the game will feel a bit dull and repetitive as you get killed, respawn, choose a class, and venture out towards the other team's base and get killed again. This is even more likely if you find yourself on a team composed mostly of computer controlled characters where you can't communicate what you want them to do. The volcano map also has one annoying glitch where you can actually lose you're princess under the pool of lava where she can never be recovered, leaving the game at yet another stalemate. Hopefully this glitch, among other issues, can be patched over an update released in the future.

For $14.99 over the Playstation Store, Fat Princess is worth checking out. It's a fun distraction until you can get your hands on something a little more substantial. Titan also promises to update the game with ninjas and pirates so it'll probably add a lot more variety and chaos to the game. The game's charm may wear thin after a while, but make some good friends over the PSN and bring a headset and you'll be in for a comical and hectic thrill ride.
