Free ammo? Just switch out your guns?

Is it true that if you take the time to switch out all your guns in the store you can get free ammo? Or does it only give you a limited amount? (still free though)

For example, if you store an empty sniper rilfe in the store, pick up a pistol, then store the pistol and get your sniper rifle would it have full ammo again?
