I was a little surprised/concerned to learn about the new protagonist as being someone put in this situation with no survival or combat skills. Like, how believable or interesting as a character is he supposed to be? I almost fear he will be annoying.

from a few previews and first looks that ive read, alot of people are saying he has a nathan drake from the uncharted series charm to him.

I think it is going to be weird with how often he talks to himself during the missions (usually stating the obvious) but i'm sure it won't be too bad.

Seems like it should be ok from what I've seen so far. Hard to tell though, most videos focus on villains, animals, action and so on. I haven't had too much of an opportunity to assess the actual character we are playing and how it feeld while playing.

Clearly they do something to him, the natives. He becomes in tune with the island and nature...he becomes John Locke. So don't tell him what he can't do.
Osiris allegory FTW.

Not researched Far Cry 3? Do so. It is not Black Flops 2, or Halo 4, but good and fun.

One of the factors is mushrooms, maybe some other organic drugs as well.

Yeah but it is amplified by the ritual you undergo.

From one of the reviews I read, He seems like the kind of 'bro' that seems shallow, and unlikeable at first, but through the progress of the story, he grows and changes, as do his motivations, and you get a better understanding of who he is as a character. Or something like that. Intrigued me, anyways.

Judging from what the devs say: He goes from awful bro stereotype to unlikely vigilante hero to psychologically disturbed mass murderer.
It's basically a story about just how messed up someone can become in a lawless, hostile land. As far as I can tell, you aren't really supposed to 'like' Jason.
