Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon User Review
I don't understand what is wrong with some of the naysayers, this game does EXACTLY what it sets out to do.

- "Just plain fun"
I'd like to start this review by pointing out that I was born in 1990 and therefore have no memory of the 80's. This doesn't matter. Anyone who has seen any typical 80's cheesy films, or classics like Terminator, Tron, Blade Runner or Logan's Run etc will understand what this game's direction is all about. The cheesyness is deliberate, it is spoofing action movies and arcade video games. And somehow... it also manages to capture the magic of 80's sci-fi, such that you really feel like a straight to video cyber-anti-hero.
Soundtrack - Perfect
Comedy - Perfect
80's Feel - Perfect
Blood Dragon Enemies - Perfect
Crazy Weaponry and Badassery - Perfect
If you want a fun game that doesn't take itself too seriously for not too much money there is no question that the £12 price tag is well worth it.
The game starts with two linear tutorial missions (that take the piss out of video games in general), and then moves to an open environment employing Far Cry 3's outpost capture system along with missions to progress the plot. The island comprises of 13 outposts, a reasonable size considering the game's price. I actually found the outpost set pieces to be better (than in 3), really letting you sink your teeth into the stealth mechanics.
The main difference with the gameplay is that you now have to really be careful out in the open because Blood Dragons, neon dinosaurs that will hear you if you make too much noise, attempt to eat you, else shoot at you with laser weaponry. The ever-looming presence of these beasts makes the feel of exploration compared to that of Far Cry 3 a far scarier one, closer to something like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. where you could be fighting for your life at any moment. The game also employs several features to help you evade or block them. Their AI is fantastic, adapting to various environments and using melee or ranged weaponry when necessary.
£12 for badassery the game. Just buy it already and go kill some stuff.
