They need a new Classification item: "Console Port"

User Rating: 6.5 | Far Cry 2 PC
Disappointment would be the best description of my overall feelings towards FarCry 2.

With the exception of Fallout 3, I looked forward to this game more than any other within its release window.

I fired it up and knew within the first two minutes of playing that I had made a mistake buying it and wouldn't finish it. Be that as it may, I forced myself to keep playing because I had in fact just dropped 50 bucks on it and wanted to feel somewhat like I hadn't just taken 5 tenspots, thrown them on the floor, lit them on fire, and then p*ssed all over them.

I made it about half way through before getting bored and moving on to different things. I was able to appreciate some of it - the setting is very unique and the graphics are very good. The combat can be tailored to your style based on your choice of weapon loadout - which includes a whole lot of really cool weapons to choose from. And last but not least, the diamond hunting for cash to upgrade your weapons and gear is implemented pretty well. The upgrades make a noticeable difference in the game play so it gives you something to strive for and a sense of accomplishment when you get enough diamonds to purchase an upgrade.

On the other hand, the constant battling your way past checkpoints that are interspersed about every, oh... FIVE FEET, makes for some repetitive annoying combat that detracts from the experience rather than adding to it. The only other choice is to try and avoid the checkpoints which will as likely get you lost, taking extra time to navigate off-road terrain, or off on a tangent and entangled in combat once again with someone else. Add to that the fact that the game is so blatantly, clearly a console port, and the whole thing was just... not exciting. I don't know what it is about console ports to PC, but you can spot them instantly and it drives me up the wall when game developers are too lazy to customize a game towards the platform its running on (ie PC with the mouse/keyboard should rock for any FPS game). When a game is ported over from console, something is usually lost in the translation and Far Cry 2 is no exception.

The game is nothing at all like its namesake. The original Far Cry was a brilliantly executed FPS that had terrific gameplay, incredible graphics, and a great storyline to keep you going.

Far Cry 2 is ultimately... Grand Theft Auto in the jungle.
