This may look like the first casual game ever with it's bright colours but be warned, this is even harder than R-Type.

Who was Sega's original mascot? Sonic the Hedgehog? No chance. Alex Kidd? Close, but you're still not there. Shadow? Now you're just being silly. It was actually Opa-Opa, a small spaceship with legs from Sega's arcade classic Fantasy Zone.

This Master System version is a pretty faithful rendition of the original. Playing as Opa-Opa, you fly around various colourful lands, shooting down enemies and dropping bombs on bases. Once you've destroyed every base in a level, you then have to take on one of the game's huge end-of-level bosses.

Fantasy Zone is dripping with charm and the soundtrack is one of the cheeriest things you'll ever hear in gaming. Despite its friendly looks though, it can get pretty tricky at times, particularly in later levels.

If you're after a bit of side-scrolling shooting action that's cheerier than usual, Fantasy Zone comes highly recommended. As one of the best games released on the Master System, it's a great start to the console's arrival on the Virtual Console.
