If you love rpgs(western rpgs) you owe it to yourself to play Fallout 1&2
Some games don`t age well ,a lot of 32 bit 3D games come to mind .
But some of them are like vintage vines: they age well and Fallout 1&Fallout2 are part of the later category.
Fallout 1,2 and Fallout Tactics come in a dvd bundle for pc for 19 USD.
There are a lot of rpg`s these days that are just shallow ,linear,uninspired and over used themes (saving the princes and the world bla ,bla.... bla...the village boy theme..) but when it comes to post apocalyptical simulation Fallout is America`s no1 choice!
I cant remember how I found out about Fallout series for sure (I think it might be GI magazine ) but I am gald that I found out about these games.
Though these games are 13 years old they feature openended gameplay style ,deep character creation and progression,multiple paths and(moral) choices on how to play and finish the game.
The graphics are on the same line with Interplay`s "Baldur`s Gate" , "Planetscape Tournament " and Blizzard`s :Diablo and Starcraft games : 2d , top view, visceral , cheese and gory (there is even trait in caracter creation named bloody mess which will let you see people around you die in horrible ways, AND BELIVE ME , a most of the modern games are not as rewarding when it commes to the all shooting and death animation}.
On the downside the color palette ,contrast and resolution are showing their age but are never in the way of gameplay.
The gameplay is turn based ,you can fight alone or you cand find allied NPCS to help you in your struggle.
There are plenty of weapons , armor and items at your disposal as loot,purchases ,stolen items or just fruits of exploring.
A lot of good things can be said about FALLOUT 1&2 .
