Boros is still addicted to Fallout, so time to review more DLC!

User Rating: 6 | Fallout: New Vegas - Honest Hearts X360
Boros here, and I'm still addicted to Fallout: New Vegas. So, the next DLC on the list for me to review is Honest Hearts. Simply because of the fact that it's the one in between the last 2 when it comes to how good they are. This one is pretty much ok... In every way. Ok plot; Ok characters; Cool enemies because they bring back certain enemies from Fallout 3, and has some original enemies; and s#!tty length. Add it all up and you get a big pile of blandness that's just used to make another pretty coin. Don't get me wrong, the gameplay's fine. It's still Fallout, but it seems like part of something that should've been bigger than it was. I fired off 100% completion inside 3 hours, and compared to the other DLC's, this one's not long at all. But we can't really chastise it too much for length, so let's take an honest look.

The plot has to do with a Caesar Legion legend about the former best soldier, Joshua Graham. After his failure at the Hoover Dam, he was set on fire and thrown down into a canyon, to set the example that, even from the best men, failure would not be tolerated. The legend was that he survived, and is now traveling the wasteland as the burned man. My first thought was, "Oh, cool. You get to meet the burned man! Awesome. This DLC should be really cool." So, you get to Utah, where this DLC takes place, and your squad is attacked and murdered by tribals called White Legs. Of course, you either have to fight or run, which ever. I was so high level at this point, because this is the last DLC I actually played, that I could've just walked away, but decided to kill them anyway, because it's fun, and I'm a little twisted... Anyway, another tribal takes you by surprise who isn't one of the one's who tried to kill you, and says, "Come with me to see Joshua." A little weird considering that if I had saw the guy that was talking to me, he would've probably been paste by that point but ok. When you get to Joshua, he tells you about coming from the west, and to help some of the tribals. My thoughts were, "I figured this would be something about vengance on the Legion, but maybe that's later." So, I gave it the benifit of the doubt.

SPOILER WARNING: After you complete one of the 5 or 6 missions that Joshua gives you, you run into a man named Daniel, who looks like he's Amish, and apparently has religious purpose there, so I guess he's a missionary. He's actually there to give you a different option than Joshua, who wants to kill all of the White Legs. Daniel wants to pack up his clan and run, like a coward... Or that's what I interpreted what he said as. He said something like "We don't have to kill them.", and that they could be civilized. Well, say that to the additional 47,000 wooden limbs I just sprouted, this very minute...

Seriously, the bastards chuck tomahawk's like pitchers throw baseballs. I have no idea where they got them all, and they never stop throwing them until you kill them. Then when you check their inventory after the killing, they only have 5, and it's always 5. Whether or not, they threw none or 50, they always have 5 when they're being looted... That's with all enemy's with thrown weaponry in Fallout. Why in the hell is that?

Anyway, I'm getting off track here. Daniel gives you an additional 5 to 6 missions, and after I finished all of the missions from them both, Joshua told me to try to recruit Daniel for his assault on the White Legs. Now, this is really weird because you'd think that there'd be an option to use the speech skill here, but nope. He just gets mad and says we'll stay here. After that, you assault the White Legs base, kill the leader, then Joshua says good job, and the DLC ends... WHAT? Where was the defending from the legion? Why the hell didn't that get mentioned in this DLC? He's the f@%king BURNED MAN, which is a legend of the legion, and this was barely mentioned at all in this DLC... SPOILER OVER.

Well, all of that aside. I guess if you really love Fallout, as I do, and just want more missions and enemies, then you could certaintly do worse than Honest Hearts, but it falls flat for me. Maybe a more climactic ending would've helped, but honestly, the idea to go with the story that they did is just mind boggling. Who thought that up? Anyway, it's worth getting just for the additions to the game but playing it might not be as good as you'd think. Especially since the DLC requires you to lower your carrying weight to 75 lbs. or less. Granted 100 lbs. if you have the strong back perk, but still. I like carrying an entire army's worth of explosive ordinance on my person at on time, so even starting this DLC was annoying. But still, I recommend this DLC only to hardcore wastelanders who love the wastelands.
