I have the trilogy box and I can run Fallout 1 with the patch.
But when I try to install the Fallout 2 patch I get an error.

    'Unrecognised data found!
fallout2.exe may not be the correct version.
    Patch has not been installed.
    Installation terminated!'

    Any help?

You didn't download the right version of the patch. Try sfall.

Or if you download Killap's Fallout 2 Restoration Patch, sfall and the High Resolution Patch are included.

    Yes! Thank you so much!
That worked! Well, sort of really. I installed that 'unofficial patch' but still got funky colors. Then I tried the high res patch again and it worked.

    Thank you again!

If this is your first time playing, the Restoration Project is not recommended. It adds a few stumbling blocks that first-time players don't need.

Killap's unofficial patch (make sure it's that one; there are other unofficial patches, but his is the one you want), and perhaps the high-res patch, should be all you need.

On the other hand, if you're a returning vet, by all means, knock yourself out. The RP adds enough new stuff to make it well worth the addition to a 2nd or 3rd (or later) run, and by then, you'll be familiar enough with the game to find ways around the occasional obstacle the mod throws in your way.

Playing on Vista I'd have problems from time to time too, for no apparent reason they'd come and go.

Aye, your just running along and your colors go haywire then less then a second or two later they go back to normal, i never had any problems on windows 98, i guess any thing more modern is to much for the game. ^_^

    I disagree with this.

I'm in the late game playing the Restoration Project and I'd highly recommend it for a first playthrough.

Plus there is a difficulty setting for combat and gameplay for a reason, if its too hard they can play on easy.

The locked door in Vic's shack, alone, is reason enough to stay away from the RP for your first run. In order to have idea where to go, after the Den, most people usually need to free Vic, and the violent approach is a little tough, that early in the game (especially when you barely know what you're doing), which means you'll probably want to get to his radio ... which will suddenly be behind one of the most securely locked doors in the entire game. (Without the RP, that door is unlocked -- or at least very flimsily locked; it's been far too long since I've played through a vanilla game to be certain -- making it a simple matter to walk in, grab the radio, and head back to the Den to give it to Vic.)

Yes, there are ways around that, but most of those are things that will only occur to someone more familiar with the game and its systems. I've seen far too many people get to the Den and suddenly have no clue where to go, next. That's usually about the point where they give up in frustration, since none of the walkthroughs are going to help them with a problem that doesn't exist in the game they were written for.
