So I just got fallout 1 and 2 on a steam sale, and both of them have have messed up colors. I did some quick googling, and found out it was because of low resolution and downloaded the necessary patches. Which didn't work. Fallout 1 gave me a cryptic message about falloutw.exe not being installed (or something similar).
Fallout 2 said it had patched successfully, but when I actually started the game again it was just as iridescent. I've installed high resolution patches for both of them to no avail, is there anything else I should be doing? I was really excited to play them, and this is quite annoying.

Download the Fallout 2 High Resolution Patch. You can pick your own resolution and color bit.

"I've installed high resolution patches for both of them to no avail"
"Download the Fallout 2 High Resolution Patch."
...A-yup...
In a more helpful note, you should, in fact, do what more_cow_bell suggested and look in the ddraw file as if the patches themselves aren't working on their own, that's where you need to be changing things to get it working right.

It seems that the problem has... gone away, I guess. I changed the resolution, and then changed it back, and the game now displays colors correctly. I don't want to do anything else to it for fear of messing something else up, but thanks for the replies.

This makes the graphics and movies that play look like crap however.
