F.E.A.R. Single-Player Hands-On

Monolith's creepy first-person shooter will hit the Xbox 360 with all the PC version's content and then some. We get a look at the single-player mode in its current state.

Running Scared

FEAR on the Xbox 360 will purportedly be better than its already excellent PC counterpart. See for yourself in this HD gameplay footage.

Console-only gamers who look jealously upon the PC's bountiful first-person fruits will have one less reason to complain this November, when Vivendi Games releases FEAR, Monolith's outstanding supernatural shooter, on the Xbox 360. Considering the game took our own top honors in the FPS category in 2005 (and was a finalist for best PC game), this ought to be enticing news to 360-bound shooter fans. Back at E3, we got a look at the 360 game's exclusive new instant action mode, which lets you square off against a flood of enemies to see how long you can hold out. Now we've had a chance to sit down and try FEAR's story mode, which is what won the game so much acclaim last year.

The main single-player game here is essentially the same as you'll remember on the PC. You're still a member of the First Encounter Assault Recon team, a crack squad of heavily armed paranormal investigators. When things start going wrong, these are the guys that get sent in--and things are going very wrong here, so you'll need to use your arsenal of conventional weaponry and your bullet-time-style slow-motion effect (not to mention your uniquely impressive first-person jump-kicking ability) to make it through the legions of heavily armored clone soldiers, all of whom are telepathically controlled by an insane military commander. And that's to say nothing of that creepy little girl who keeps showing up all over the place. The whole point of FEAR is to make you feel like you're in the middle of a highly stylized action movie--a goal the PC version accomplished admirably--and it looks like the 360 version will be just as effective.

In case you've been worrying that the Xbox 360 wouldn't be able to handle FEAR's demanding visuals...don't. We got to try the game in a nearly final state running in 720p, and it looked every bit as good as the PC version and ran at quite a smooth frame rate. In fact, it technically looked better--it seems the developers discovered they had a little extra performance to work with, so they've added high-dynamic range lighting, more-complicated particle systems, and higher-resolution textures to improve the look of the game in subtle but still effective ways. And you'll be able to get a brighter look at all those pretty environments on the Xbox 360, as the developers have made a small design tweak to your character's flashlight by giving it some extra battery life, so you'll be able to keep your surroundings illuminated for a bit longer before having to recharge.

Aside from these technical improvements, FEAR's story mode on the 360 will be pretty much what you remember from the PC. We learned that the developers are adding one new weapon to the fray, but they weren't ready to reveal exactly what that weapon will be. Furthermore, a new bonus mission is being designed for the 360 release, though from the sound of it, this level won't be integrated into the existing storyline (rather, you'll likely access it from the main menu). The game plays as well as you'd expect with the lovely 360 controller, as all the game functions--flashlight, slow motion, movement controls, and so on--are aptly mapped to the various buttons and D pad. Anyone who's used to shooters on consoles ought to feel right at home.

If you've been waiting all this time to play FEAR on your Xbox, you'll get at least a small taste of the game soon enough, since Vivendi plans to release a demo on Xbox Live sometime in October. The game seemed just about complete--at least in terms of graphics and controls and such--when we got to play it recently, so the team should have no problem adding the new content and polishing up the last remaining bugs in time for FEAR's release in November. Until then, check out some new HD gameplay movies and screenshots of the Xbox 360 version in action.

The graphics on the demo are TERRIBLE. What makes the developer think they are better? They look positively Gamecube.

Why do you people post comments without reading the complete article? "I hope it won't be laggy"? When you want to post, read the full article before you do so. Just shows some people just post to get attention.

I hope the xbox live play won't be lag e

If you look at the interview, it does say that the Xbox 360 version has better visuals and framerate, and they are also throwing in an extra weapon. What I am concerned about is if it has online multiplayer, or at least split-screen.

Doom 3 was not boring. It got a little repetitive after Alpha Labs but it got interesting during the Hell section and after that. Its single player campaign far outshines that of Halo 2 and Half Life 2. The only reason I didn't like it so much was its easy boss fights and its rather mediocre multiplayer. Doom 3 uses darkness and ambushes to scare players, in other words jumpscares or shocks. It gets stale once you know all monster spawns but on it's scary on your first run. FEAR on the other hand uses loneliness/isolation to scare the player. If you're comparing the PC versions of both games, I'd say Doom 3 is better because you can download many user made single player maps and mods or even make your own. FEAR has some expansion packs too but I don't know about user made maps. However, for consoles I think FEAR is better since it's a next gen game.

Better than Doom3? That won't be hard. That was one of the most boring FPS games I've played in ages. It looked and sounded amazing, but it was basically a tech demo. FEAR has better gameplay although it's still a bit repetitive. The creepiness aspect worked better than Doom 3s rather predictable creatures-leaping-out-of-tiny-areas-just-as-you've-passed-them. Hopefully the controls won't be too awful, the slow-mo feature makes precision targeting very useful.

tomlee129 5 pts

yeah but is it going to be of the same caliber as doom3 as far as the creepyness goes??? is it actually going to be better than doom3?? it needs to outclass doom3 in most ways to be much good.

F.E.A.R. better be good as the pc version..........

think about it, F.E.A.R. and Gears in the same month? major cash haul. if there both for the 360, then their gettin double the money.

soulknight63133 5 pts

This just doesn't make sense. Why would MS have F.E.A.R. and Gears of War going head-to-head in the same month?

eleemon 5 pts

A friend of mine was playing F.E.A.R. on his computer with a 360 controller. I got to check it out and if it ends up being anywhere close to the same experience, then I'll kill to get this game. O_O

Deimos27 5 pts

Cool! Regardless of whether its on PC or 360 (and I do smell a PS3 port on de way...$$$), this is one of the best games ever... Looks like the 360 is finally getting some lift... :D

JBiker51 5 pts

Note that GameSpot used the words "single-player portion"... Even if they didn't intend to talk about the online, they managed to mention it was there from their article.

"STARS_Splinter Was it just me that thought F.E.A.R was overrated?" it was just you. loved it on the PC and it looks pretty flippin' sweet on the 360. i might just have to buy this game twice.

STARS_Splinter 5 pts

Was it just me that thought F.E.A.R was overrated? I mean, yeah, it was ok.. but not really *that* great.... still, the 360 version should be something to look forwards too... no more choppy framerates and random crashes.

jdelpozo1 PC or XBOX360, FEAR is just an awsome game all around. Dont Hate exactly! just because now it actually takes half a second to aim by not using a mouse doesnt make the pc game better. Nd graphics dont make a better game either. PC or Xbox this game is fun.

um..this game sucks..ahahahah..why is everybody making such a big deal about this game..the multipler is boring. the single player is well pathetic..they try so hard to make it scary but they cant..i spit on this game

SteveTwo 5 pts

Better lighting, textures and particles is what keeps the graphics from being watered down in this port. I'm just glad to see this port has extra content and design features added in. It means that, rather than just being a quick buck from a half-assed port, these people are really interested in making a good game on the 360 that they would like to play. The smooth framerate is the key thing. It was a sad realization that the 360 port of BFME2 was just a quick money maker, as a console with a triple processor should be able to have its code optimized to run smoothly. That's why I got a console, smooth running games.

Icy_Guy 5 pts

Hold the presses! We've forgotten one bit of complaining! "Why was the game's released date pushed back to November? :( :( :(" (I actually don't care about the minor delay. I've been waiting for this for a long time, and if they need an extra month to polish it, then that's fine with me.) You may now resume the 360 vs. PC debate.

spydrman5472 5 pts

I've heard amazing things about this game. Can't wait to play it. Maybe they'll offer the multiplayer as a free download/demo via LIVE since they just announced they're releasing the multiplayer portion for the PC version for free download. It'd be a great marketing tool and a kick in the butt to LIVE. The service needs more high end downloads for free to show off the potential and true worth of the service. Plus I'm sure it'd convince a lot of people to go out and buy the game if it's good enough, which I admittedly have heard it's not all that great, but if they tweak it enough for console players it could be good, right?

spawn611 5 pts

I totally agree with you the_real_vip 3rd ps wernt ment for PCs unless you have a game pad. I wouldnt dream of playing resident evil on mouse and keypad just the thought of that scares me. Killzone made my life a hell using the sniper rifle from long distance with game pad. But i wish it came out for pc :)

I really can't wait for it to come to the 360. I already beat it on my pc, but nothing will beat my home theater set-up with my 50-inch high definition DLP. That's gonna be siiiickkkkkkkkk. Slow-mo action all day!!
