Pretty Awful

User Rating: 3 | Evolve PS4
Evolve is a player vs player game that pits a team of 4 human players against 1 monster player. The humans will try to kill the monster in a variety of game modes. And by variety, I mean 4. 4 of the most repetitive game modes you'll ever play. It's either kill the monster, escort the survivors, kill the monster's eggs, or protect your ship. Over and over and over. Repetition is a huge problem but that doesn't even begin to describe most of the problems with the game. The game has several other fatal flaws that really hold it back. The first of these flaws is presentation. I don't know about everyone else, but I like to follow the KISS principle. Keep it simple, stupid. Evolve fails to do that rather spectacularly. The HUD is a cluttered mess with a wide range of things that don't seem to be explained anywhere. By the time you realize what you're supposed to be looking at, you'll either be dead or so bored from aimlessly wandering the map that you'll quit the game. This presentation spills over into another major issue with the game: accessibility. You think a game with such a simple concept would be one to just simply pick up and play, but no. It's not. The game obviously requires some depth, but you'll never be able to delve deep into the game because of the presentation. Like I said, by the time you figure out what you're doing, chances are you'll be dead. The repetitive gameplay modes are a huge problem. In a game so dependent upon them, you'd expect a wide variety of them to play from. But there really is only 4 modes to pick from. Four modes, in a game heavily dependent upon different multiplayer modes to keep the experience fresh. It gets old quickly, doing the same things over and over. Kill the monster. Defend your ship. Kill the monster's eggs. Escort survivors. Over and over and over. There is an almost complete lack of a single player mode and story. The single player mode is just the same as the multiplayer mode, with bots. The game also falls flat by not even including a story mode. There could have been an amazing, incredible journey that depicts the downfall of this planet and potentially humanity due to these deadly monsters. There are many questions that could be answered. Where did these monsters come from? How can we stop them from breeding? Where are the characters from? You'll never find out because they didn't think to even attempt a story mode, which is such a huge letdown given the massive potential. The game does look pretty. Environments are detailed and look great. There are no frame rate issues or graphical hiccups. But that's probably the only good thing about the game, honestly. Overall, unless you're looking for a repetitive game with dull gameplay and no story, I can't recommend this. Save your money and don't suffer the same disappointment that I did.
