Regeneration could have been better if it wasn't for a few obvious flaws..

User Rating: 6.8 | Evil Dead: Regeneration PS2
Evil Dead: Regeneration is more of a "what if" story than anything else. It starts off with our hero, Ash, back in the cabin where the Evil Dead movies began. Anyway, Ash is assaulted by his friends-turned-deadite who he obliterates. Eventually the police come and see the massacre and arrest Ash on several accounts of murder. When they hear his story of deadites and the Necronomicon, they place him in Sunny Meadows - a mental asylum. However, unbeknownst to..well... everyone, Dr. Vingo (Ash's shrink) has found the Book of the Dead and unleashes the deadites. In the midst of all the madness Ash escapes, meets up with one of Vingo's test subjects named Sam, and together they are forced to save the world.

Definitley an interesting spin on the Evil Dead storyline, but sadly the visuals couldn't help to enhance the story or gameplay. The game looks really fuzzy, pixalated, and sadly to say, ugly. Everything except the two main characters look pathetic, and obviously don't wish to utilize the power of the PS2. The levels aren't all that impressive, and with about one run through you will realize there isn't much to see or explore for. The cutscenes are kind of good, but for some reason Ash's facial expressions look really goofy.

The game play is fun, I'll admit. You get to use all different kinds of combos and weapons including the famous boomstick & chainsaw, handgun, grappling hook, flamethrower and much more. Like I said you can do a lot of combos, that can be pretty brutal and entertaining (like impaling a deadite onto your chainsaw then blowing away it's head with a shotgun). You can also perform your average platforming moves - jumping, blocking, etc. Eventually, when you get Sam, you can kick him around and control him once in awhile... you can also turn into your much stronger Evil Ash self.

There are a few factors that drag this game down and prevent it from reaching a higher score. To start, the game is VERY easy and unchallenging. In fact it is so easy, you may finish it in about 4-5 hours. Ontop of that, the game is wicked repetitive, both in fighting and in objectives. By this I mean you'll enter a room, fight seven to ten deadites, find a lever, move on, enter next room, fight seven to ten deadites, find a lever, etc. By objectives I mean in order to move the story along you need to find 3 spirits, protect Sam until he gets to and feeds them to this gigantic One Eyed Soul Eater..in every stage. The last two things that really burned my arse was the targeting system and the camera...

The targeting system is horrendous, and REALLY ruined my gaming experience with this title. Lets say you are fighting deadites - one above you, two to the side of you. For some reason, if you try aiming at the one in front of you, Ash will instead target one of the two next to you. This is very frustrating and annoying, it has caused me to die more than once. The camera is also very bad, and pretty much refuses to move to the area you assign to it. If you want it behind you, most of the time it will move in front of you... its just very annoying and hard to control.

There are a few extras to find and unlock throughout the game. These extras are really just interviews with Bruce Campbell & Company, and some concept art that you could probably just go and download off the internet. One very interesting interview has Bruce talking about Ash's possible appearance in the upcoming Freddy vs Jason 2 movie.

Dont get me wrong, the game is pretty fun with the combos, killing deadites, and basically playing as Ash...not to mention kicking Sam & hearing him scream is hilarious... but its just so easy and filled with bugs that it degrades the overall fun factor. I suggest you either rent this game, or if you're hellbent on buying it, look for it in a bargain bin/
