I've never played EQ before and I'll be playing it for the first time now that it has gone f2p.

I was wondering though, how much game do you get for free? Even if I like the game, I won't be able to spend a dime on it for a few months at least. Are there going to be any major limitations that might hurt the experience until I invest money into the game?

    Thanks for the replies.

you get every expansion except the current one, so theres tons to do. if you plan on sticking around it would be worth it to upgrade to a silver account for the 1 time 5 dollar fee.

You get tons of content! So don't worry. They only thing some people buy right away are certain races and classes they want, but you don't have too.

Thanks guys. I really can't wait to start playing. I'm hoping I really enjoy this game so I can eventually start playing with gold status.

I really haven't really been into an mmo since Final Fantasy XI, so I'm hoping this game gives me that feeling. WoW got old quick and I despise games that copy WoW, except for maybe Rift, but even that started to bore me after a while.

I like to play Atlantica Online and Dragon's Nest, so hopefully this game can be third in my rotation. One thing I do like about the f2p system is that I can take a break for a while and not get charged for it.

I really would like to find a game that is like Final Fantasy XI though.

The only two really big restrictions that I would find annoying if I was staying free are

    1. Very limited classes. I wish there was just one or two more classes included in the free to play or that they at least provided more soloable classes. Wizard is really the only one with any real power. The Warrior with a cleric merc or cleric with a warrior merc CAN solo but it takes a lot longer since you have no solid DPS. Rogues meanwhile can do solid damage, but cant take a hit for crap and do their best damage from behind(meaning you have to play without a cleric or take the hits yourself and not do backstabs).

    2. Bag slots. You only get 4 bag slots, thats really not jack. If you are f2p expect to do a lot more running back to town to sell stuff.

All that said, EQ is still a damn fine game and worth joining. My recommendation is save your money and wait for a double station cash day. On those days you can spend $60 for 12,000 points which is enough to buy a years subscription. That basically means it equals out to $5 a month for full accese to the game, hell of a deal and a lot better then being nickle and dimed on f2p(even if you quit in less then a year).

    1. take a tank (warrior) merc with ANY class at least until level 50+
your damage output for any class will at least double, meaning things die twice as fast.. you won't need healing because the merc can take one heck of a beating and regens faster then you do, plus the mobs will only have half the time to do damage before they die.
that being said, i do really wish there was more options for classes and races.. or that they were a lot cheaper, like $2.00 for a class and i guess $3.00 for a race isn't bad.

    2. i actually thought this was going to be a lot worse then it is (granted i have 6 bag slots, because i had an account before and automatically got silver accounts) but you can easily buy 10 slot plus packs (deluxe tool boxes are easy to find, and cheap at just over 1pp each) so you can carry 40 different items since most non equipment items stack.
plus if you are hunting in one area for a while you will quickly learn what is and what is not worth looting.. there's no point in picking up rat ears unless you need them for trade skilling.

but no matter what, it is very much worth the $0 you pay to play
if you have questions just come here and ask, or in game on the newplayer and general channels.

See thats the thing. You are looking at the game very differently from me. When I was talking in my first point I was not even THINKING about pre 50 game. Thing is EQ really is not a game about pre 50 anymore, you can reach that in just a week or so of play playing non stop and not much long after if you take your time. Meanwhile you can spend months on the game after that, especially after hitting 75+ and really dipping in to AAs. A class should not be picked based on pre 50 play but on around 70ish.

Overall I agree its worth playing while its free, but I think most people would be wise to research what classes they want to be and just pay to buy one or two.

IS there a game with more content than this?

I would be fairly suprised if there was.

I think 75 is when most classes start feeling like their modern counterparts (partially because lazy devs just kept copy/pasting the 70-75 spell lines ad infinitum for most classes, with bigger variables). pre-50 shouldn't ever be a consideration because thats like a weekend of play and oftentimes pre-75 gameplay is full of dead spell-lines and obsolete roles.

It really does feel weird though saying "eh the game starts at 75". I mean thats so weird compared to EQ back in the day where 75 was end game and 50ish felt more like where it opened up.

There is lots to do at low levels, and with the new 'Hero's Journey' that has recently been added to the achievements window it is now much easier to keep track of what you have done.

Just enjoy the game from level 1 - you'll get to the high levels soon enough, no need to race through and miss out on lots of low level content and quests.

No, there isn't. But it's kind of hard to compare any other game to EQ when it's been around for the past 13 years and has 13 expansions released.

13 years and 18 expansions... They were doing 2 expansions every year for almost a decade. Hmm, i guess that was until Nov 2007 then the expansion after that one was almost a year later.

I had a friend ask me recently why I was playing EQ over WoW. I told him that a fair part of the reason was because of the content. In WoW I felt I killed the same few mobs over and over, every few levels they would reskin an existing mob to make them look ever so slightly different. In EQ meanwhile starting at fairly low levels I was not just fighting lots of different types of enemies but also interesting things like Treants that were 10x my height or giants that had diamonds and other minerals busting through their skin.

EQ just has soooooo much more content, and most of its not a simple reskin of the same troll or turtle you just finished fighting 5 levels before.

play on the test server and you get... EVERYTHING!!!!

GOLD membership, all the inventory slots including shared bank slots.. all races and classes... etc.. etc. it even says "gold member" where on live servers my account says "silver" "upgrade to gold"
regular number of character slots.. (i have 10 on this account because i once had the all access pass, i forget if the normal is 6 or 8)
edit: my second account has 9 slots?? maybe i bought one slot with some free Station Cash.

all veteran rewards for all characters..

i believe there is a permanent xp bonus.

i think you even get all the expansions... i'm only missing the very newest anyway, and i don't even know what it adds off the top of my head.

I am surprised noone said this. The apprentice merc's are garbage. Even a T5, my T1 journeyman is much better. It's not even about the dps, just the apprentice's actually die. My journeyman, at low levels, can solo everything, even that crazy pit fiend in the tutorial zone, when it is red compared to me. I was lucky to have 2k SC on my account from previously playing EQ2, so I got gold, but for me I find it kind of absurd how big a difference there is between F2P and P2P.
