EVE online is NOT for everyone, and I'm here to tell you if it is or is not for you, in a fair way.

User Rating: 7 | EVE Online PC
Let me point out first of all, most of the reviews on Gamespot are not exactly the greatest reviews of this game, such as the 1.0 review, this game is definitely not worth such as low score, you want to know why, because it was none of those things described in that review, the game is good, it just wasn't for that reviewer.

Gameplay / Mechanics: This is up to debate, the ships definitely feel different because of the amount of different sizes and shapes of the ships, so you definitely feel like you are in a different ship when you get a new one, this is good, especially since high end ships take a very long amount of wasted time, and this wasted time is through the games skill learning system, where they're literally timed based off of REAL LIFE time, and these skills can range anywhere from 5 minutes to a couple of months, literally, and this is EVE's main way of stretching out the game's progression since there are no technical "levels" the player can rank up in personally, just a wide range of skills. Combat is pretty boring, it's all automated and you pretty much have to manage your energy sometimes, so this part of the game is all player driven (to be fun), I personally didn't find it that bad, except waiting months for skills to be learned.

There is plenty of variety in this game, ships can be anywhere from the size of your house to the size of an entire base (Titans), this sense of scale is amazing and shows you how insignificant you are in this world, which is quite large, the CCP definitely have made the biggest universe in a game ever, but we'll get to that later.

Another mechanic in this game is the Corporation system, much like a Guild system in other MMO's. This mechanic also leads to why gamers hate this game so much, because once you leave the starting corporation (the faction corporation you're in when you begin the game) you can be enemies with other players you normally wouldn't be enemies with in the starter corporation because corporations can be at war with one another and this war mechanic completely bypasses the police system the game has, which act as guards for noob systems. So I would suggest getting into the high tier stuff before going into a serious corporation, because, well, this game is VERY hardcore, the community is the most elitist PC crowd you have seen, most of the time, and for most people this can be a drag, especially since its a monthly payment game, so I HIGHLY encourage you to stay in the starter corporation for as long as you can and educate yourself on the high end of this game before thinking about joining the best of the best.

Like any space warfare game there are massive space battles, you get into this when you join a good corporation and are at war with another, these are amazing to be in, if you care about the possibility of losing your ship in these battles, which (high end tier ships) are very expensive and WILL make you mad when you lose it, especially if your pod gets killed and you lose some augments (stat boosters) that are also expensive, so I'm warning you now, this game is very hardcore and should only be played by those looking for a challenge.

Graphics: The game looks amazing, each system is unique (from what I have discovered from it, and each ship has amazing architecture depending on your taste, while the animations of the weapons in the game aren't the best, the rest of the game more than covers up for the less than stellar weapon effects.

So there you have it, as unbiased as I could make it, this game is NOT as bad as it seems, it's fun when you get over the VERY steep learning curve it has, and if you can get over the fact that months (or even years) of waiting for something can be lost in one battle with someone, so this game is NOT for everyone, but certainly does NOT deserve a low score because someone got frustrated at some stupid players, there are no griefers in this game, what people would classify as griefers are just players taking advantage of your stupidity, you HAVE to be careful in this game, or die horribly, which is why I can't express enough how much this game ISN'T for everyone, the economy system is as real as real life and this game definitely simulates real life in a great futuristic space sim. The devs DO care about this game and release expansions for free, and although there is a monthly payment, if you know how to make money in this game and find your own wealth, you CAN avoid the monthly payments by using the in game currency instead, so it's a win-win if you learn the mechanics of this game.
