I have two other drivers right now. The truck that I bought, I upgraded the engine and the clutch to the highest available. Was this a dumb decision? Should I just buy them with all stock parts next time?

Naw, the performance of their trucks affects the money they make. Giving them sleeper cabs helps them rest better, so they need less rest.
I also believe they will not take loads over a certain weight if they dont have a truck over a certain horsepower, but I could be completely wrong in this. Cosmetic upgrades are pointless on hired driver trucks.
However, those trucks are still your trucks. You can hop into them and drive them whenever you want. So its nice to set them up as best you can if you've got the money. And come on, they represent your company, you should make them look good!

The laws contrived by the proud are their security and their undoing.
Such laws make disobedience a virtue, and obedience a sin.

^^^ Since when! Driver's have never been affected by the trucks they drive, and rest periods are always the same. They are government mandated minimum time, after all, and all the trucks in this game have sleepers anyways. Some sleepers are bigger than others, but again, government mandated rest periods anyways. Upgrade employee trucks only if you have cash to burn.
Employee's get better over time and produce greater profit regardless of rig. Don't confuse their increasing skill level with them appreciating the new ride.
