This is the first time I've played a game in the series, and I like the old school feel of it. The only thing that gets a little repetitive is putting the walls on your map. Is there a way to automate that?

    Nope.

The map drawing is one of the core mechanics of Etrian Odyssey. You can get by just with auto-mapped floors if you really don't like it, but it's better to actually fill out the map.

I'll probably just deal with it. I have no problem with the map creation. I just find it a little annoying to have to put a wall down every couple seconds.

I hardly ever put down walls if I can help it. If you really feel like you wanna, maybe just draw them in after the fact? I've never found them helpful, but I usually fill out the rooms as soon as I walk in. Failing that, I add a little note on the map to show me that there's a hallway I haven't walked down or something.

I think the only time I've ever drawn walls was for shortcuts in EO2 lol

I play with auto-map off and draw the map myself.
I think it is fun >_>

at least it doesnt force you to map out the entire area before proceeding like the other games's first stratum.

I just started playing, have never played one in the series. The mapping seems tedious and this is just the easiest one. Does the game become easier as you learn the controls or is it always a pain to figure out where you're going by mapping. Also, is there a way to change the camera angle or viewpoint, so you can see your character rather than just walking through the area in first person? I'm having trouble getting used to that.

The game gets a little easier once you learn what things do, but it's still quite difficult. You can't change your view point or perspective , the game is always in first person view.

Not sure I understand what you are saying. Are you saying you're having trouble navigating the dungeons? Because, it will only get more difficult. Or are you saying that you don't like mapping out everything? If so, well tough luck, since mapping is a core part of the game, and that won't be changing.

Mapping it manually should actually help you navigate the dungeon, as you have a much clearer understanding of the layout. If it's making it harder for you to figure out where to go then I'm not sure what you're doing wrong.

I love mapping and they did it just right so that it's fun and doesn't feel like too much of a chore to do. And yes, it does give you a much better feel for the dungeon when you've mapped it yourself.

    there's an auto mapping? o_o

no really, apparently i've completely missed this

that aside, i enjoyed making the map and mine's all super detailed! it has lots of little markers and notes everywhere depicting paths with little door icons that read "door" when you tap on them and secret path marker with little arrows indicating whether their one way, two way, or which direction they go and with the little icons for mining and getting herbs, etc AND even the ability to make that auto path that you can turn on and off for easy leveling!

    i like the map making

but come on guys where's auto map?

It's in the options, it's turned on by default. All auto mapping does, is it paints the tiles as you walk over them.
