There are not a whole lot of RPG's out for the PS3 right now, and if you're looking for one to play, I would definitely recommend Eternal Sonata.

Eternal Sonata offers a rich and colorful world with endearing characters. The side questing in this game is quite limited, so too is the ability to explore the richly detailed landscapes of the game. The game is very linear and you spend a lot of time watching cut-scenes: in many ways it has the feel of an interactive movie like so many other games of its genre. I do not consider any of this as a bad thing, however, I'm just warning you what you have in store incase non open-ended gaming is not your thing, or watching hours of cut-scenes is "boring" to you.

The characters in this game were very well done, each having a good story that comes alive with well voice-acted dialogue. I especially liked the older characters (ie Jazz, Crescendo, and Glaives). Some of the younger characters were slightly annoying (Beat, Salsa) but they were certainly tolerable and did have their moments. The main characters, Polka and Allegretto were also very well done and you certainly developed a deep attachment to them by the end of the story. But the best character of all had to be Frederic Chopin. Based on the real life Romantic era Polish composer, Chopin was presented in this game as a 39 year old man on his death bed, living the last few hours of his life in a dream world. His voice acting and clever dialogue, at times bordering on the profound, was truly the highlight of this game.

Each chapter of this game also had a sort of interlude where a musical piece of Chopin would be played to a biographical story of a period of his life. Usually this was loosely connected to the events that were actually happening in the story of the game. All of the music here is quite excellent, and to be able to introduce people to this magnificent composer through an unconventional outlet like a video game is a truly original idea that deserves acknowledgement.

I must say I thoroughly enjoyed this game. Even though it was pretty short (33 hours for me), it seemed just right. The graphics were awesome, and the interactive combat system which requires "real-time" blocking always kept battles exciting and challenging. The characters were endearing and beautifully came alive through good voice acting and exquisite animation. The story moved at a good pace and was very enjoyable. It had a certain innocent sweetness that is hard not to appreciate while also possessing a maturity and commitment to ideas and dialogue that really made you "think". Even though this game is by no means a masterpiece or as good as some of the really great RPG's out there (it did have its flaws to be sure), it is a well made game that is definitely worth playing.
