Eternal Darkness is a good survival horror game that does a great job of messing with the players mind.

Okay so we all know Nintendo is mostly known for their family friendly titles. However Eternal Darkness changed all that and proved that Nintendo could scare you just as well as anybody else. Of course the real makers of this game are Silicon Knights and they produced a engaging game with plenty of depth.

The game begins with a murder. Dr Edward Roivas is found decapitated in his mansion home and his grand daughter, Alexander Roivas decides to find out who murdered the poor bastard. Throughout the game you'll travel through history (not literally) and discover a ancient plot that threatens to destroy the world.

Its a neat setup, one that'll keep you playing as you find out what happens next. Unfortunately the game takes a stumble in the gameplay department. For the first 6 chapters, the games great. The combat is deep and provides plenty of depth and the Magick portion which involves combining different runes to make spells adds much strategy to the game.

Environments drip with atmosphere and the haunting soundtrack will get your heart pumping, even when you know nothing is going to happen. But for the remaining 6 chapters the game suddenly loses steam. Enemies never change and become predictable and not very scary. Environments are recycled and the latter puzzles veer on the edge of logic.

It's one half great game, other half repetitious bore although the one thing that keeps you going is the unique sanity effects. Their effects vary and while you won't be fooled by most of them, there are some that might actually confuse you. In conclusion Eternal Darkness is still a good game and the amount of originality on offer is admirable. It just would have been great if the latter half was as good as the first.
