Let me first start out by saying I’m a rabid hockey fan. ESPN NHL 2K4 happens to be the best hockey game out there. From the gameplay to the sound, this game brings a complete package and those who purchase it will not be disappointed. The gameplay mechanics in this game are above and beyond any other hockey game around. Players are allowed to freely deke with the right control stick as well as perform aerial passes and even pin players up against the boards. ESPN NHL 2K4 has provided a variety of control options for the novice to the seasoned player. All the above options can be explicitly controlled when choosing advanced controls, while some of it becomes automated when using beginner or normal controls. This really lets players choose when they want to make an aerial pass, particularly when passing through traffic around the crease areas. Using Gary Thorne and Bill Clement as the broadcast team is a wonderful choice. Being ESPN commentators, they really big a realism to the game that is by far some of the best commentators. What would be a nice feature is having a combination of different broadcasters, such as Steve Levy, Darren Pang, and Barry Melrose. With the ESPN license, it would really complete the broadcasting package. The biggest complaint from most about this game is the fact that it’s too hard to score. I would have to disagree with this notion in the fact that hockey in general is a difficult game to score in. But I find this game to not be that difficult to score in, even on the Hall of Fame setting. Yes, when I play the top teams in the league I may only score 3 or 4 goals, but most of the other time I’m averaging around 6-8 goals a game. That is plenty of goals and it becomes easy once you figure out how to score. For your reference, I play 10 minute periods and the most difficult setting and don’t make any changes to the characteristics of the players. I also find it to be more fun when a game comes down to the wire. The intensity is awesome. I definitely feel that for anyone who likes hockey games to own this game. It provides the most complete hockey experience, and with online play for the Xbox, you’ll always be able to find a challenge out there.
