For any sports-sim, playability is a very crucial issue. Any user who checks the "controller layout" section of a game considers this issue. When you first take a look at NHL 2k5, advanced controls of the game may frighten you, but the combinations are so optimum, that you can score or defend your goal easily, any joyfully. In my opinion, some game options are really unnecessary, but who cares? You can ignore them anyway. The graphics are not perfect, especially you can mix the team jerseys for some match-ups. But the moves of the players and cut-scenes feed the user perfectly. The most valuable property of NHL 2k5 is that: it is very realistic. Body checking, poke checking, shots and passes are not exaggerated and very smooth. The game-play is not so fast (but adjustable), and the cameras are fine, so playing this game is fun, fun and fun !
