Peter Brown explores, expands, exploits, and eliminates all threats to this Endless Space video review.
Peter Brown.... You read the script of this review as if it was the last thing you ever wanted to do! Good features of this game are spoken of as if they were detrimental to the game and come across as "who would ever want to do that". Sorry dude. Worst narration of a video review ever!
May pick up his game. I was always looking for a better recreation of Masters of Orion. Oh and yeah bad review by this dude.
Unfortunately have to agree this is an appallingly bad review. My mind switched off very early on...zzzz...
very small fonts difficult to see and so many parameters to set you feel totally out of control
I've never played a game like this one before. I've only started dipping my feet into true pc gaming with Warcraft III. Maybe one day I'll give a game such as this one a crack. I'll admit that I grew up on consoles, so this type of game is gonna be quite a challenge for me.
I love strategy games and certainly having them set in the Sci-Fi further enhances my enjoyment of it. But it wasn't a great review, very droll and only really told slightly more than the back of the box might.
One of the worse reviews on gamespot. Doesn't do anything to explain the game, after i played it, it was totally different than what i imagined. Please make use of this guys services elsewhere, not on reviews.
This looks like a game of great depth and thought, but......... Homeworld is much more interesting, and the narrative more rousing.
I just recently downloaded and started playing this game and I must say that it's a great strategy game. I play a lot of Civilization V and I've been looking for a good space 4X game and now I've found it. Just a couple hours into the game and I'm sucked into it and I can't stop thinking about it. If you want to dominate the galaxy then this game is for you. If you're lacking any brains then it's not for you.
Guys, are you fucking serious? It's a 4X space strategy game. You check out star system (eXplore), build up colonies (expand), research technologies, build ships, harvest ressources (eXploit) and kick around other civilizations (eXterminate). The reviewer says so in the very first sentence of his review!
Oh well, brains seem to be a luxury ressource now.
what a terrible review! why dont you start with telling us what the point of the game is first?
Hello all I have played and beaten this game 3 times. It is an interesting diversion at best. The graphics aren't bad and the interface is pretty easy to figure out. All and all a decent 4x game with some unfortunate flaws. There area few complaints I have one being the combat, which is nonexistent. You go through the trouble of creating and upgrading new ships and all you get to show for it is an interactive cutscene that cycles through the same angles over and over again while allowing you to select 3 different "cards" that can include, overcharge weapons, camouflage, short circuit, you get my drift. You have a prologue phase in which you can select these cards and then 3 combat phases long range, medium, and melee. The graphics are nice but you never feel like any of your choices mean anything and so you don't really care. The tech tree is vast but the way it works is confusing at best. you'll select a tech and in that tech it will allow certain unlocked features that never seem to have anything to do with the research that unlock it and there is no wiki to give more detail in the game so you never really know what your efforts are giving you. I felt like I was playing a giant spreadsheet with some video thrown in. SOTSE is a much better 4x game or even GALCIV2. Hope this helps those who were wondering.
I agree... its such a mediocre review. I don't get why it got a 8.0 score from the review itself. Guess its made to confuse people so that they would buy it themselves just to review or check it out. :P
Well played GS... well played.
I must say that this game kinda' sucks. Seriously, play this 1v1 against the easiest AI and you will see why. But if you don't want to waste 24 hours or so of your life let me sum it up for you:
The AI will always have about twice as many points as you, the only way of moving forward is expanding but since there's an animation for everything it takes minutes to go through your planets production ques, open borders/closed borders don't make any differences since the AI can still fly to empty planets in your territory, and thus when they're inside the game thinks it's allowed to move anywhere, the combat is dull and boring, there is no difference between the combat in the beginning of the game where fleet-score is 2000 compared to the end where it's 50000, well, the ships are bigger and much fewer, but due to the ships being so far away from each-other and killing each-other at the first phase you never get a sense of scale, the AI is horrible, it keeps asking all of your resources even if you have said "no" 100 times, in the beginning you start at cold war which means you can attack their outposts and ships as song as they're outside their territory, but if you make peace with someone you can't go back to cold war, you can only go to war which means that they will attack your colonies, the bugs are horrible, you can only have 10 ship designs, I got stuck at this one point because when I tried to delete a design the game told me that some error had occurred and that I could either keep playing or CTD, I chose the former and the design was still there, you can't turn of simultaneous moves even on single-player which meant that the AI with it's 999999 APM could do things much faster than you, the game itself is rather generic and there's no feel of accomplishment, you can only have 3 heroes in the hero "pool" yet the hero "pool" is so big that you would think it could hold more than 6, the ability to go "off-road" would be ok if there was a maximum range, currently you can fly anywhere without having to bother with fuel or anything like that, as I said earlier, the game is just bland, there are 3 weapons, 3 armors and some passive things, the weapons are all the same except they are direct upgrades of the previous ones, there is no sense of sci-fi in this game like there was in Alpha Centauri, there is no "evil" or "good" path, just "better" and "better", everyone follows this linear technology tree where it's just 'better food exploit', 'terraform lava', 'better kinetics' etc, there are no interesting concept or ideas. Oh, and one more thing, if you attack you can choose 'manual' or 'auto', if you chose manual then someone can attack some other fleet and choose 'manual' but since you're already in combat you choose 'auto' which means that you almost automatically loose if you use auto vs. manual then 2000(manual) can win against 5000(auto).
This isn't a 4X, this is a competitive multiplayer, a bad one at that.
well, I guess I know how the game works. but i'm not sure if this is a review per se. I am interested in it now though, knowing a little more about it.
If I did not know how the game plays already having played for several hours, this review would actually confuse me as to what the game is about. A more linear and explanatory approach might have been better, explaining for example how combat, the most controversial side to the game yet the side shown in all trailers might have been better.
Getting into how this differs from it's contemporaries might have been a good approach as well.
@grokh I agree, the game sounds pretty damn interesting but he has 0 enthusiasm when talking and it makes the game sound utterly boring.
Seems like a fair review. I've played the game a lot over the last month in it's beta form and it's nice to have a new solid 4x game to play. But the combat is just eh and the tech tree takes some time to figure out. Diplomacy is kind of weak, but that's a common problem in the genre. But the interface, graphics, music are all well done and the empire building is fun as well. I'd recommend it to anyone who's been a fan of the genre.
Good review/synopsis Peter! Just try to work on adding some ... panache to your voice next time =P.
Overall I found Endless Space to be fairly good, ESPECIALLY if you haven't played games like Sins of a Solar Empire, or Galactic Civ to death. If you have though, you'll probably be less amazed. It is still a fun game to play, but possibly with less replayability value before you get bored. My only major disappointment was the card based combat, which is fine when looking at the game from a more turn based Civilization style perspective, but bad when looking at it from a Homeworld (or even Sins of a Solar Empire) one.
@Falzonn I've played both Sins of a solar Empire and Endless space, i like Games like these or C&C or First person shooters.
Sins, Is Ultra messy but Ultra cool at a later stage, Endless space is more relaxed kind of game, soo.... when i'm doing work i can play this game slowly while i won't get caught cuz it do not totally need my attention when i play it, Sins however for me is very messy
@DonGibon X-Rebirth is a totally different style of game. The only similarity is that both games are in a space setting.
