Echochrome offers an innovative way to solve puzzles, but fails to capture interest for long periods of time.

While waiting for Littlebigplanet to come out, I decided to purchase a similar puzzle platformer to appease myself. In all my years of gaming, I have never played a game quite like this. To solve puzzles, one must use perspective, which is a great concept, but is somewhat of an annoyance at points.

Your character is a small mannequin like figure, who walks on his own and only stops when you tell him to. This adds a great challenge to the game, and I loved that. The character must be directed around platforms to collect "shadows" of himself, while facing obstacles such as holes, walls, or "bounce mats". Avoiding these obstacles requires some thought, and your own perspective. The camera can be adjusted to take obstacles out of view, therefore allowing your character to walk right over them as if they weren't there in the first place. If the character falls through a hole, you can adjust the camera to let him fall to a lower platform... or at least what looks like a lower platform (remember perspective). The perspective part of this game is what gives it it's strength, but echochome still doesn't go about without a few problems.

Graphically speaking, echochrome isn't very impressive. A white background with white lines is what makes up each level. Of course, if it was any more complicated than that, the game would be extremely confusing. Even though the graphics are so simplistic, they actually benefit the game itself.

A major downside to the game was the amount of features to play with. As for "story mode", there is none, just level after level; 56 to be exact. You do have the option to create your own levels in Canvas mode, but the building process is extremely frustrating. The camera is hard to control and building complex and challenging levels takes very long. Even after you do finish a level, there is no online aspect to share your level with others. What use is building your own level that you already know how to complete?

Overall, echochrome is a great and unique game to the PSP and PS3. It provokes thought and keeps you entertained at the same time. Playing too much at once can be annoying and boring, so I would consider it a "pick up and play" game. There is a demo available, so try playing it before you actually buy the game to see if you really are interested in playing more levels. Personally, I think that the 10 dollar price tag is too much, and I would have happily have paid 5 dollars for this game, considering the amount of content contained in it.
