This game doesn't have such a strong cult fanbase for nothing.

EarthBound. One of my all time favorite games, ever. Anyone who enjoys video games, new or old, needs to give this game a shot in some way or form. While some could argue that the graphics and gameplay haven't aged well (even during the time, the graphics were considered horrible by some), or that the game is too hard, you need to give it a shot. There's something about this game that makes you want to play it, I can't even define what it is. When I first started playing, I found it "boring" and "hard" due to all the grinding that has to be done right off the bat, but over time I found myself enjoying the game for what it was, and I'm already itching to do it all over again.

Okay, okay, maybe I'm giving this game TOO much praise, but it really is fantastic.

GRAPHICS:
I love them, actually, despite that they're widely considered the biggest flaw with this game. While there's nothing too amazing or flashy about them, what's great is the USE of graphics. The character and map designs are top notch - something that alot of games don't have.

AUDIO:
Oh, WOW. The soundtrack is fantastic. I can't explain it in words. Just... go listen to it. It had to grow on me a little, but it's good stuff.

STORY:
Well, the story is mostly comical and non-serious, so if you're used to epic, FFVII style stuff, you might not dig it. You would be missing out, though. The story, while it could be considered parody, is good. I love and care for the main characters despite that they don't say much, and I find myself playing it just to see what happens next, even though it's mostly made of humor. I'm honestly not sure what it is, but it works.

GAMEPLAY:
The gameplay is pretty traditional: fight enemies and bosses, level up alot, progress through the story, solve puzzles, you know. The game is set in more current times, so your enemies (when the game starts) include stray dogs and crows, and you fight with baseball bats, frying pants, and slingshots. There's something that I find oddly humoring about it, but that's one of the main things that put it apart from other RPGS during the time like FF3 and Chrono Trigger. The enemies are not random - you can see them on the screen, and you have the choice to run away from them and risk them attacking you first, or sneak up on them and get a first strike before they can do anything. So, you're rewarded with wanting to fight, while punished for avoiding it. Also, weak enemies will run away from you if you become too strong, which is nice when backtracking.

All in all, what can I say... EarthBound is work giving a try, at the very, very least. There are things about this game I can't explain with my own words, so you'll have to experience it for yourself. When you first start playing, I recommend doing so with a completely open mind and maybe a bag of clips, and just enjoy yourself.
