Finally bought this game this weekend and I have to say.... (maybe spoilers)

Very disappointed.
I absolutely LOVED the first game, it had a great B game quality. It definitely was a touch too long, but it had a great gameplay flow.
This game it feels they tweaked the entire formula, and for the most part it's horrible. It feels like the story isn't even laughably bad, it's just dull. The Enemy choice is lacking. And while the boss on the third to last level is fun. The rest of the enemies are weaker than the original.
The biggest complaints I have is the leveling System, and the final level. Leveling system, which is needless (at least it could have used a unified level system)
The final level in the first game was truely awesome. Taking down a ship that you have been chasing for an hour, was a great feeling. In this game... you run away. WTF There's not even a new unique monster on that level.
Overall I paid 20 bucks for this game, beat it in a night, and overall can't believe how weak it is compared to the original. Just my two cents.

Leveling system definitely needed to be made easier / shorter but if you beat the game so quickly you obviously played on the normal difficulty setting and have not unlocked / found most of the weapons.
And that's a major part of the game since weapons are class based.
Playing the stages on Inferno difficulty is the only way to play, for us.
Made hoping for that next weapon drop more fun and a real challenge when not using Pestiside nukes.
But since you've had your fill, move on to another game.

On the original game I played it all the way up to beating it on the fourth difficulty on most stages. But there's no much desire for me to come back and play this one on harder difficulty. Especially since the missions are so long and they add so many enemies it'll be more grinding than I want.

Just curious- When you say "original game" or "first game," do you mean 2017?

Yeah, Earth Defense Force 2017.. are there games before that? (I remember one for the SNES, but that was hella long ago.)

My biggest problem with the game is the leveling/weapon drops. One major reason I kept playing 2017 was the fun in getting so many items/upgrades. Also the scale of everything seemed truly epic. I want to feel insignificant but still be powerful.

They started on the Playstation 2, as far as I know, using the engine Sandlot created for Robot Alchemic Drive.

The SNES Earth Defense force is entirely unrelated too.
But yeah, there's 3 PS2 games, that were released in Japan and Europe. Monster Attack (Chikyu Boeigun), Global Defence Force (Chikyu Boeigun 2) and Global Defence Force Tactics (Chikyu Boeigun Tactics).
They were released as part of a Japanese budget games series titled Simple 2000.
I'd say that out of all the games, GDF is the best. Another playable character (Pale Wing - A girl with a jetpack and energy weapons, much more fun than Jet in this game), more enemies (Flying ants, rolling pillbugs, advanced saucers, bomber saucers, tripods/quadropods instead of Hectors), more guns (Sadly, lacking the turrets of EDF 2017. Not having those makes it a helluva lot harder to play solo) more bosses (Gigantic centipede, an incredibly huge godzilla expy, a sky covering true mothership) and more levels (71 IIRC).
EDF IA is a decent game, but it just doesn't compare to EDF 2017 and most definitely not with GDF.
