Earth Defense Force is a breath of fresh air. In an always evolving industry that has come a long way from its humble beginnings roughly thirty years ago, it's great for a developer to show that you don't need to plop down millions of dollars into the newest engine or hire celebrity voice actors in order to deliver a good game. Sometimes, less is better, and this game shows that if you have a simple concept and execute it well enough, the end result will be a satisfying gaming experience.

The premise is simple: In the year 2017 aliens have landed on Earth and they're up to no good. And It's up to the E.D.F to blow them up. That's where you come in. The plot is irrelevant in this game because there is none. None that needs addressing anyways.

The graphics look very primitive, especially when compared to other 360 games but not so terrible that would distract me from enjoying the game. As far as audio goes, the one thing that really stands out is the voice acting. It's awful. It sounds as if all the voice overs were done by the same person, which conjures up hilarious situations in which an A.I team member lets out a war cry followed by several other team members shouting at once in support, all sounding exactly like the same person. It brings out a chuckle every time it happens and never gets old.

The simple yet addictive gameplay is where this game truly shines. There are a total of 52 levels in the game and most of them consist of hundreds of enemies coming at you as you shoot them down. The vast amount of enemies that are thrown at you is impressive. They range from giant ants, spiders, robots, spaceships, and even a couple enormous dragon like creatures that could go toe to toe with the likes of Godzilla. Their size is something that needs to be mentioned, they are HUGE! The first time you see that army of gigantic alien ants coming at you is something to behold. The action is always frantic and you rarely have a moment to take a breather, especially during the later levels, having a co-op partner comes in handy. The weapon selection is also very impressive. There's the expected assault rifles, shotguns, rocket launchers and grenades but there are also lots of diverse weapons thrown into the mix such as turrets, flamethrowers and even some alien weaponry, all of which are unique and fun to experiment with.

E.D.F 2017 is a simple game that gets to the point and does exactly what it needs to do. The graphics may be mediocre, the sound and voice acting are horrendous, animations are laughable, and the story was obviously an afterthought. But despite all its flaws, the game is just simply fun to play. And when it comes down to the bottom line, isn't that really all you need from a game?
