This has to be the most panned "average" game I've ever seen.

- Dec 10, 2011 1:47 pm GMTI went in expecting a clunky unplayable mess of mindless hallways based on all the reviews, but the battle scenarios are actually quite varied (even if the enemies themselves aren't), the environmental puzzles (while not brain-churning) are engaging, driving is a fun change of pace, the environments are varied (more than you can say for your average FPS these days), there are few non-extreme glitches (and no game-breaking ones), and the controls are borderline perfect even when you're asked to do some platforming, (I've never fallen due to bad controls).
Seriously, how does a game that's so "average" at worst end up being thrashed as the worst game of the modern era? Is it all just the backwash of the 12-year hype machine that made people expect the game-to-end-all-games? Or is my version some super-patched version that removed all of the bad framerates and blurry textures people complain about? Or were these graphical flaws always unique to the PS3/360 versions? - Dec 11, 2011 2:53 am GMTWhen it was first released, the game had serious issues. As an example, on my machine, the intro was largely unplayable and the game itself had to be set down to lowest resolutions for it to run at a proper framerate.
This and more was resolved with a later patch so those issues don't show up now. But, at the time, some of the complaints about the technical side of things were richly deserved.

- Dec 13, 2011 3:49 am GMTI own DNF on the PS3 and the only technical flaws I've seen are lengthy load times and at times slow texture pop-in.

HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy entry for "Sac!":
Mostly Australian - Dec 28, 2011 8:27 am GMTA simple answer to your quesiton is hype. Fans of DN3D waited over a decade of updates with promises of bringing an old school shooter to the modern day consols. Instead we got exactly what you said "average". It didnt have any element that was present in the older games besides the humor and some reused enemies.
Instead of DNF we got a graphically/gameplay/etc. worse version of a cut and paste Halo/COD copy. It felt like any other game on the market and had nothing special going for it.
The sad thing is most of the things they could have added would have taken 0 time at all, they just chose not to do them. So does this game deserve a 3...probably not. But those ratings reflect how pissed dedicated fans were after we received a 5/10 when we were expecting at least a 7.5/10.

Beast Mode - Jan 4, 2012 10:16 am GMTMost critics wanted to hate the game. You can tell this is the case by the utter hatred and contempt in their reviews, and ridiculously low scores that should only be given to unplayable bug ridden shovelware. These people were not "Duke fans", they only claimed to be because they thought it would lend more credibility to their reviews. You will find more even handed reviews by true Duke fans on the Duke4.net forums. Those are the people who really waited 14 years.
- Jan 6, 2012 6:28 am GMT^ As someone who used to play a lot of DN3D, Quake, Doom 1/2, Blood, etc. I can tell you I waited and was very dissapointed. I was expecting something like the said games above (lots of guns, hoards of enemies to sidestep through, lack of health/ammo, complex levels, etc.).
Instead I got a Halo/COD clone......back to playing DN3D again.

"When you stick your flag in the moon and say 'Now we're done trying!' that's the gravy!" - Jan 17, 2012 4:59 am GMTIt's your fault if you had unrealistic expectations.
DNF is a 2005 game which Gearbox scrapped from the incinerator, meaning you're playing something like a "lost beta".
If you had realized that, you wouldn't have approached it like the wannabe 15-years-of-godliness you supposed it intended itself to be. - Jan 17, 2012 6:26 am GMTxdiesp6 posted...

the biggest unrealistic expectation ive come across is people wanted a carbon copy of Duke Nukem 3D because they honestly thought that was the first (and possibly) only Duke Nukem game.

"When you stick your flag in the moon and say 'Now we're done trying!' that's the gravy!" - Jan 18, 2012 10:19 am GMT^ Just the most successful and the one that got it the most fans.
But by all reason lets ignore that because everyone played platform duke back in the day :/
Either way Duke has survived these years by doing what everyone else in the industry does, doing it better and then adding a splash of Duke in there. This game took what everyone in the industry did 5 years ago, did it worse and added almost too much Duke in there.

Beast Mode - Jan 19, 2012 11:55 am GMTiv been a fan of DN sense day one, iv played all the major titles and i really dont see what the problem is with this game, to be honest i love it. it has its flaws definentally but the simple truth is that just about any franchise that makes the leap to next gen consols tends to not be as good as its previous title, ie; tomb raider underworld, mortal kombat vs dc, halo 3, final fantasy 11 and 12, they were decent but no where near as good as the origonal. once that is said and done though they come through with some pretty awesome games, tomb raider 2012 looks phenominal, mortal kombat 2011 was perfect, every halo sense 3 was alot of fun, and final fantasy 13 has some of the largest popularity sense ff7. in this particular case the flaws dont take away from the game in my book, the jokes are what youd expect, the graphics may not be the greatest but its easily ignored, the gameplay is very interactive and entertaining, alot like halo and cod but thats pretty much what fps has become these days. i say take it with a grain of salt, if this is as bad as it gets, i think we're in for a real treat by the time the next game comes.
- Jan 19, 2012 11:04 pm GMTit was a fun game simply put the DLC is actually even better and i thought the originlal was great a solid 8-8.5 it has its falws some textures are ugly(looking at the cars) but most are fine and some even great

The only really amazing Duke Nukem game was Duke Nukem 3D. No other game came close to doing a genre that well.
And to the guy that had a complaint about the puzzles in DNF - don't you remember wandering around aimlessly at certain points in DN3D because of the keycard puzzles?
This game was going to be a critical flop no matter what. Fact is, it isn't that bad, but it had a metric pantload of hype and there was no way it could have delivered.

I walked off the path and I was unprepared... - Feb 1, 2012 10:19 am GMTIt reminds me of when the Final Fantasy "fans" gave a bunch of negative reviews about FFXIII after it didn't live up to its hype. Thankfully you can usually tell if a review is an actual criticism of game flaws or a mere fanboy rant.

Money is overrated... - Feb 10, 2012 2:13 am GMT
I enjoyed this way more than MW3 for sure. i was just playing that game for the cut-scenes. I wont say that its the best game ever, but its really fun to play. it has some nice design choices, but its just poorly made.
- Feb 17, 2012 6:56 pm GMTDuke 3D was a success because of several significant features:
- Nudity and blood wasn't as mainstream, so it had that sort of edginess to it
- Early FPS's had a sort of charm of simplicity that made them easily playable, but often difficult enough to not make you slack
- There were lots of secrets, interesting areas, and places to explore
My biggest complaint with Duke Forever was that you were on rails for the game, inbetween stupid minigames/vehicles. It was "Follow this hallway to the next gimmick, enjoy". If it hadn't fallen so far from the original Duke 3D, it would have worked, but it was definitely tainted by the console problems of today's games. - Feb 18, 2012 2:34 pm GMTBonnabinTheDire posted...

Meh, I really liked the original Duke Nukem games, aka the old DOS ones. Sure, it's as if they're a completely different genre now since the gameplay between them and the modern-day shooter is vastly different, but I still find them incredibly entertaining.
Hype kills everything, always does. People were hyped about Skyward Sword, and were for the most part disappointed. People were hyped about Skyrim, and many were infuriated with the glitches, and put off by the amount of fetch quests after a certain period. People were raving about this game since it was long overdue, and boom! Instant disappointment with the result.
If you're going to rave about a game, you need to be prepared for what happens if it doesn't come out like you were fantasizing. Otherwise, stop raving about it.
