My Leaderboards Progress/Goblin Deck Strategies and Efficiency Survey

- Jul 13, 2012 8:03 pm GMTI'm keeping a record of my progress through the Overall and Weekly Leaderboards for personal use. The second half of this topic will be about Goblin Deck strategies, tips, and techniques. I'll also be recording which decks I win and lose against. To most of you, this information will be mostly known techniques. But it should prove useful to any newcomers interested in using this deck.
FFA Overall Rank: 623
FFA Weekly Rank: 15
My Xbox Live name is Devil Hunden, maybe I'll run into some of you out there.
My current 60 card Goblin deck:
Goblin Arsonist x2 - Great early card because it basically acts like a 2/2 for only 1 mana
Goblin Bushwhacker x2 - An amazing card when played at the correct moment. Can be a game changer for only 2 mana
Goblin Grenade x2 - An amazing card all around, sure, you need to sacrifice a goblin, but 5 damage for 1 mana is worth it almost every time
Goblin Guide x2 - Another great early card. Getting this card on turn 1 is always a welcome sight for some early damage. With 2/2, Haste and 1 mana cost, what's not to like?
Raging Goblin x2 - A decent little card that can always come in handy, whether for some early damage, or sacrifices, or for blocking a big attacker
Shock x2 - 2 Damage to anything for 1 mana? This card's usefulness is a given
Ember Hauler - Handy for taking out specific targets early on. Cheap too
Goblin Piledriver x2 - This card is amazing if attacking with others, especially against blue decks, who are helpless against him
Goblin Wardriver - Cheap and he buffs all other attackers. Something you'll always want to try to do when using this deck
Krenko's Command x3 - 2 Goblins for 2 mana, fair, right? You add these guys with a Warchief, Wardriver, or Chieftain already in play, and they can be a force to be reckoned with. Not too mention it's great in sync with sacrifices or Krenko
Goblin Instigator x2 - This card is a game winner or at least game changer if you can get it off early enough to make use of it
Gempalm Incinerator x3 - Able to cycle for 2 mana and do massive damage to blockers, always gonna be useful
Goblin Chieftain x3 - +1/+1 buff and haste to all creatures is exactly what this deck is all about, striking fast and buffing up small guys
Goblin Warchief - Very handy when you need that extra mana and just can't draw it. Nice having things a little cheaper, and he gives haste to all to boot, all around great card
Clickslither - With Haste and trample, he's already good, but with his ability, he can become a game changer
Goblin Goon - Cheap for his size and besides, it's not often that you don't have more creatures
Goblin Ringleader x2 - Very nice when you're a little later into a game, he can help draw some nice reinforcements
Krenko, Mob Boss - This guy is a game winner. Start with him in your hand and get him out early, and it's gameover almost every time unless they insta-kill him quickly
Reckless One - Nice card if you already have a few goblins in play, but it's especially brutal when playing against another goblin deck, because their goblins count towards the +1/+1 as well
Siege-Gang Commander x 2 - High cost, but once you get him into play, he's amazing. Not only does he bring three 1/1 tokens with him, he is also great for taking out specific targets or bypassing blockers and doing direct damage
As for which decks I've been winning and losing against, here's the current tally:
Exalted Darkness - W 1 L 1
Pack Instinct - W 1 L 1
Goblin Gangland W 3 L 1
Dream Puppets W 3 L 0
Obedient Dead W 1 L 1
Born of Flame W 0 L 1
Ancient Wilds W 1 L 1
Crosswinds W 1 L 0
Celestial Light W 0 L 1
So far it seems I play best against other goblin decks, and mill decks.

U.S. Marine Corps - BX Data Systems - Jul 13, 2012 8:44 pm GMTThere isn't much strategy in the goblin deck. Just play all your goblins and attack. Its a no strategy deck

A_dsouz "How do i know if, say, +4 is significant or not compared to +6."
digitalwill2000 "6 is bigger than 4" - Jul 13, 2012 8:58 pm GMTAnd then you get Flamebreaked. Or they kill all your important cards, trade for your weenies and you have no hand left.
People like to pretend that Goblins takes no skill, which is stupid. It does. No, it's not a particularly in depth deck (it's not meant to be), but it's not just the 'hur dur play Goblins and mash attack' deck that some people like to paint it as.
You still need to make the right decisions about what to play and when, it's just that it isn't carried out over the next 20 turns like you're playing Blue. - Jul 13, 2012 10:11 pm GMTI added Goblin War Strike and Dragon just to be able to make non-combat wins so my opponent doesn't quit in time.
now THAT is goblin deck strategy :/
This backfires however if the opponent quits as soon as he realizes you're playing goblins. - Jul 13, 2012 10:21 pm GMTI notice you haven't faced anyone playing Peacekeepers. Any ideas why?

"It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue." - Jul 13, 2012 10:48 pm GMTOk, time for an update.
Exalted Darkness - W 1 L 1
Pack Instinct - W 2 L 2
Goblin Gangland - W 8 L 1
Dream Puppets - W 6 L 0
Obediant Dead - W 3 L 3
Born of Flame - W 0 L 2
Ancient Wilds - W 4 L 1
Crosswinds - W 1 L 0
Celestial Light - W 1 L 2
Peacekeepers - W 1 L 0
So based on the stats thus far, I seem to do consistently well against other Goblin decks and Yeva's deck and also the Mill deck. The red and lifegain deck seem to give me the most trouble, and Black and Pack seem to be half and half, depending on draws.

Same thing seems to hold true for the most part this time around. I dominate other Goblins, both blue decks, and the Elf deck. I finally lost a match to a mill deck out of shear bad luck and waaaaay too much mana and not enough goblins lol. Still seems to be a toss up with Pack and Obedient decks. Opening hands seem to play the biggest factors in these games.

U.S. Marine Corps - BX Data Systems - Jul 14, 2012 5:26 am GMTI think that your results speak more of your ability than the deck itself. Your win% in the mirror match is a good indicator of this.
I would suspect that you could pilot any of the top 4 decks to similar win percentages.
Switch to Born of Flame or Obedient Dead and see what happens

PSN and XBox Live ID: Marximus1 - Jul 14, 2012 7:02 am GMTI play on the Ps3, and it's really strange seeing so much mill. Last 30 games I did I only ran into one. On the other hand, Chandra and Mono black are the decks I run into the most, and I don't think i've ever seen Yeva more than thrice my entire time playing this.

There's still two sides to the debate, though. You could play it intelligently like the TC and I respect that. On the other hand, you can play it like a complete idiot and still win because you got lucky, your opponent got a bad draw, or you just overwhelmed them. The former is obviously going to rack up more wins but the latter is still going to win pretty consistently.
Case in point, I just got done playing mono black against a guy playing a 100 card Goblin deck. He was playing terribly and and it was a bad matchup for him so he had no business winning but he still won four out of nine matches based on luck. Each match he won he ended up throwing down every Goblin he had but my sweepers were nowhere to be found. I would remove key Goblins when I could but I just couldn't keep up and he would end up overwhelming me. If I had been playing against someone like the TC that played with skill it wouldn't have stung as much but getting spanked by a nub playing the deck on auto-pilot just hurts.

This is why I rigged my OD deck to play better against Goblins. Despite the sweepers, it's a relatively hard matchup for OD if one isn't drawn quickly and the goblin player is competent.Mr. Hulk, you are here for the case Lucy Stevens vs. Hulk correct? YOU BET KID!

The burn deck still seems to give me the most trouble. I can handle everything else rather easily most of the time.

U.S. Marine Corps - BX Data Systems - Jul 16, 2012 10:59 am GMTAs much as I'd love to criticize you for using the easiest deck to pilot, I can't. As someone else said, your record in the mirror is good, very good. Kudos. I also feel that your record is becoming large enough to be considered a sample size of the community. Once you hit 100 then I feel that we'll be able to safely say what the most popular decks are (Goblins is a given).

Starting to get a little better against Chandra's deck. You have to play aggressively, but not overly aggressive, or you'll just get burn and lose everything. A lot of timing and luck are involved. Other than that, I've pretty much got all the other decks figured out rather well.

Finally have more wins than losses against Born of Flame now that I've figured out how to play against it more effectively. Still haven't lost to a Crosswinds deck even once and the mill deck has still only got me the one time when I got mana flooded.
